Good day, fellow XS’ers!

New to the forum, but have been riding my 1979 SE for a couple of very pleasant years now.

I’m building a new tree this winter and was wondering if you could take a look at a diagram I made.

Currently my bike has a Newtronic electronic ignition and a separate regulator and rectifier. To further simplify things, I would like to swap those last two for a solid state regulator/rectifier (as pictured).

Anything I’m missing? Does it all look well connected? I’ve only been doing this electrical stuff for a few months, so I’m kinda new at this.

To compare, here is my current setup.

Any insight or help would be massively appreciated!

🙏

This is my bike, by the way…

Hi Rob, welcome to the mad house. To my untrained eye, that to diagram looks correct but there will be people along later who are better at these things. Nice, tidy-looking hardtail you have. Cheers, Raymond

Welcome
consider making up your own Reg and rectifier with an Automotive Regulator and Bridge rectifier.............scroll down to post #2 for your bike. It runs a B type regulator system for points model bikes

Indeed, I used a generic three phase bridge rectifier and a Peugeot/Lada/Lucas regulator. The American regulators mentioned here are not so readily available in the UK and are expensive here anyway. Including making new sub-harneses, I did a new rectifier and regulator for less than £25. So, including a set of new alternator brushes I got a more or less new charging system for less than £35.

Hi rob, you have put your ignition coils behind the engine... where is the battery?

Hi Jay, thank you! I’ll try to make more sense. The battery is pretty small… colored it green in the attached pic. There an even smaller arrow (sorry 😂) coming from where the coils (bobines) are mounted. They are fed by the on/off switch and the electronic ignition before going to the spark plugs. Is that wrong?

I mean on the picture of your bike. I cannot see it
,( the battery). I like the metal tank look. FrankS has a similar theme going on right now, with his build.

Ah, sorry. Hidden in this metal box. The electronic ignition and the battery are in there.

On top is a main on/off switch and a light switch.
