Wordman's Build (with questions, answers, and suggestions)

It's been nearly 2 freaking years since I updated this thread.

Oops.

Life has been...

...interesting.

On 7 November 2024, my mother died of complications of a lovely little disease called Corticobasal Degeneration, "a rare, progressive neurological disease characterized by the death of nerve cells and shrinkage in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. It leads to severe motor, cognitive, and speech impairments, typically beginning between ages 50 and 70."

For the 5+ years previous, my sister and I took turns helping her and my father. My sister lives about an hour from them (now just dad), while I live a good 10 hours away. She would go over several times a week, and I would go down and stay with them about a week per month to her a break.

In the meantime, my noggin decided it was dissatisfied with this arrangement, and so the frequency of the lovely little headaches I get increased by several fold.

And then there were the fun detours such as when my wife broke her finger and needed corrective surgery, the asshat who decided to key my car, etc., etc., etc..

Interspersed with all that, we were increasing out trips to visit my in-laws in New Mexico. My father-in-law was fighting a 14 year long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, and had gotten to a point where the end was obviously drawing near, and he could no longer travel. As my wife has MS and cannot get into a tub without help, I drove out and replaced the guest bathroom tub with a shower stall so she could visit without me having to be there. This made it so I could continue to tend to my parents, while she was able to see her parents quite a bit that last year.

He passed away 3 November 2025.

As to Kristy (my wife) and her MS, last year she had a pump installed which pumps Baclofen (and antispasmodic) directly into her spine (making it 1,000 times more effective) to help with the spasticity in her legs. The good news is, now she can bend her legs much more easily. The bad news is, with them being pretty much locked up for so long, she has no strength and actually needs more hep getting around. She should have been doing better than she is currently, but with all the goings on, we weren't aggressive enough in upping the dosage and so she hasn't been able to do the exercises needed to get strong again. She's about got it dialed in, so we're hoping she'll be a lot more mobile in the next year or so.

So, as you might imagine, most projects pretty much came to a halt. Between not having the time and spending all our money on trips to her folks or mine, not much got done.

Where I am now...

Projects. Current project is rehabilitating the front room (if one could call it that) in our house. Originally, there was a set of sliding glass doors and a small patio, but at some point some genius decided to put a roof over the patio (enlarging it by 8' in width, but doing nothing in depth) to create a pretty much useless room. Worse, as I have found while trying to unf#@k the construction, it wasn't built very well, either.

Pulling the floor up I discovered the concrete slab/porch. On 4' of either side, it's just dirt.

I discovered a window!

The bottom of this wall was completely rotted out.

I'm replacing the walls with 6X6s and 2X8 headers. The ridge (not currently well supported at all) will be supported by 6X6s and a 2X8 ridge beam.

Once finished, the entire thing will be screened in. In the place where I discovered a window, there will be an entrance door (we'll actually have a front door!), and a set of French Doors will go approximately where the opening between the room and the dining room was.

I'll use gravel and crusher run to level the sections on either side of the pad, then finish the floor with pavers.

Peaking out in the background you can see my Jeep. I'm working on rebuilding the suspension and redoing the interior (to be continued)...

Continued...

In May I got an occipital nerve block, and until this last weekend, I had been pretty much headache free since. What a difference!! My next one is scheduled for 22 July.

Oh, I need to back up a bit. I mentioned the car being keyed. That was my Miata. They got the trunk, the entire passenger side, and the hood. Since all that had to be repainted, I paid to have the rest done as well.

Turned out very nicely!

And speaking of cars...

A couple months ago we were in Florida to visit my dad. I'd taken him to some appointment or other (he has dementia), and then to lunch. While we're sitting in the restaurant, I get a call from Kristy. She's fallen (more like slid slowly) onto the floor and can't get enough traction to get herself back up. So we abandon lunch and head home.

Some lunatic in a Chevy pickup decided I'd somehow insulted his manhood when pulling out of the parking lot (or something) and so begins to road-rage. At the traffic light, he pulls up next to us, flailing his arms about wildly while shouting something undecipherable. I gave him a wave (something like "sorry dude!") and figured that'd be the end of it.

Worng.

As we pull away, he keeps up with us, still yelling and gesticulating. And then he comes into my lane.

Crunch.

To give the guy credit, he fessed up to the cop that he was at fault, claiming he was just trying to yell at me but "forgot how far his tires stuck outside of his truck."

And that, ladies and gentleman, is what a totaled 2003 S-Class looks like.

I'd bought the Mercedes a couple years ago and done a ton of work to get back in great shape. Now, with my dad, helping Kristy's mom, the porch project, the Jeep project, and all the other projects which I'd either like to work on, or which must be worked on, we figured I just didn't have the time to fix up another one

So I started doing some research. Now, I'm not necessarily a luxury car guy. Okay, I'm really more a sports car guy. Previous cars have included an '86 Olds 442, a '79 Trans Am, the above Miata, a '92 BMW M5, and a '95 BMW 540i/6, while the current "inventory" includes my '72 442 "pro-touring" build and an '86 Mustang LX "Merkur" build. But because Kristy uses a wheelchair whenever we're out, I wanted a car with a large rear floor (between the back seat and the back of the front seat) to store her wheelchair, plus a good size trunk for traveling.

After looking at newer (but still older) BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class, Lexus 460L, and even a few Cadillacs, the Dodge Charger, and the Lincoln Continental, we ended up with a 2017 Genesis G90 Ultimate.

Beautifully maintained and with only 40K on the clock, it's a fantastic car. It was more than I really wanted to spend, but given how devastatingly awful depreciation is on luxury cars, it was still pretty inexpensive, and less than I would have spent on anything new.

One crazy note about it, it has the 5.0 with 420hp (but still gets some 25mpg on the highway, and that's despite it's near 5,000lb weight!). But the really crazy thing? 11.8:1 compression!! Technology is amazing.

We've driven to Florida already (keeping a keen eye out for Chevy pickups with the wheels sticking out), and it's a joy to drive. Handles far better than the weight should allow, too.

It’s that time of life for you. So sorry. I hope you can come out on the other side a stronger man rather than used up.

I’m currently on my fourth bereavement leave in 12 months. It’s been stressful. That time of life.

Best wishes for better times ahead.

Thank you. Someone recently told me, "we're at that time of life where it seems life takes more away than it gives." I don't think that's actually true, but I understand the sentiment. It really does feel that way sometimes.

Funny story...

I needed a few things done to the Genesis, so I made an appointment and dropped it off. They gave us a G70 as a loaner (nice, sporty, too much turbo lag).

Now, in case you haven't figured it out, we live out in the country. Every day we see deer, groundhog, snakes, chipmunk, skunk, and various other wildlife.

Including turkey.

In fact, the most turkey we've counted in our yard at any one time was 42 of the buggers.

I was afraid they might start wheeling up a trebuchet and launch an attack!

I'm sitting inside, and I hear turkey chattering. I look out back, then out front, then out into the driveway...

IMG_2669.jpeg

This lunatic has decided he doesn't like his reflection! He walks around the car, chattering and occasionally pecking at his reflection. He was persistent, too! I ran at him waving my arms like an idiot and he walked away, then came right back. I finally had to chase the damned thing off with a broom!!

And so it seems you are up to date. At least, I think you are. I'm sure a few more stories will pop up and I'll try to post them as well. Especially on a day like today when it's hotter than the sun outside and I'm stuck inside with a big damned headache.

Have a good one!!

Turkey problem? Set out a mirror for them to fuss with. It can be quite entertaining.
Once had a cardinal obsessed with the cardinals on either side of my wife’s Ford Focus. He’d spend all day everyday at war with them, also shitting all over the car doors. We ended up having to box the mirrors whenever the car was in the driveway. It went on for months!

I’ve seen that in action! Must be something about those red birds.

Been working on the porch the last few days (thank God! Seems I've turned a 2-week project into something more stretched out). All 6 support columns are now in place, and half of the old front wall is down. I got one of the cross beams in place (took some doing, getting a 2X8 up in the air with just little ol' me—ratchet straps to the rescue!).

If I can keep up the momentum, I might be able to work on my XS sometime before the end of this millennium!
