Friday afternoon. Me on my XJ650RJ (Seca) running up the backside of the "Grapevine" San Joacin valley headed south to LA. Seems like 10 0r 15 miles of steady climb on winding 4 lane. I have a tank bag and a duffle strapped to the tank and am making a steady 80 mph. The limit was 55 in those days. My girlfriend, now my wife, was expecting me for a weekend visit. I wasn't watching rear view mirrors to closely. This bastard went past me at about 100 mph up the hill to set his speed trap for the down hill vehicles going too fast. View attachment 256330

Blink. Then dust in mirrors... Maybe technical failure, stuck throttle, heart attack? I guess 270 feet per second between his V+ and my V-...

Juneau. The capital of Alaska. The ONLY state capital with no road access.

^^^^can a person see Russia from there?:umm:
(great photo)
Funny story...

One of my favorite T shirts I had back in the day during the Cold War (1984-1990) when I was stationed in Alaska. There was an outline of the state of Alaska with some F-15 silhouettes on it and it said in bold letters "We provide Top Cover for America".

There was a footnote below the silhouettes that further said "Its not the end of the world, but you can see it from here!" meaning Russia of course.

No idea what happened to it, but still remember the shirt.

'nother Cold War memento...
We had these made when I was in England (Upper Heyford) back in the 70's.

I`ve been to Juneau. The whole town smells like the fish cannery. After $450 worth of ground school I did get to fly a Cessna 185 sea plane over the Mendenhall Glacier. Mendenhall Mud (fudge) was delicious.

In the old days before cheap digital memory, or no memory at all, lab work relied on observations and lab notes. Imagine a display that once shut off, could never be recalled again. Unimaginable today... In the old days you could make a measurement, take notes, but it was gone when you made the next measurement. I was amazed when I checked into a lab and they had one of these. A camera designed to fit the O-scope display and shot a polaroid shot of a test result. The ensuing picture got taped into the lab book report.
