XS 1B Carburetors

Yes, that’s my bike! But apparently mine is an XS-2. It’s all very confusing what Yamaha was doing back then with this model. I’m still not sure what the big difference between the TX & XS 650 were. Maybe trim level?

I had a TX 750 back in the early eighties. It was a great bike and the engine was very different than the XS design. I know they had the issue with the chain driven counterbalances and oil cavitation problems, which doomed future sales. But the only problem I ever had with it is it broke the shift shaft return spring twice? But that was an easy fix. Just had to pop the clutch cover off and replace it.

So, what were the differences between the XS-1B and the XS-2?

Yamaha made a few miner teething problem changes to the XS1 and 1B, there were changes to the carbs, conrods, (XS1 midyear),

It was mainly the front end hydraulic disk brake on the XS2. Yamaha made a complicated rotor/front hub set up with the right front fork as a one year model set up. This set up will not interchange with any other model, (do a search for Mailmans XS2.restoration),
XS1/1B had drum brake on the front. Changes to the gauge cups, (miner), gggGary found the early model gauges have a screw on bezel. @txxs knows the early model differences maybe he will chime in.

In 73 Yamaha changed the XS650 to TX, was a make change to bring the XS in line with the new TX750 and TX500. They changed back to XS for the 650 and 500 to distance the bikes from the TX750.

73 TX650 they changed the front end. The rotor and hub were seperate, rotor mounts to the hub with bolts. Rotor/hub/fork combination carried through to the 76C, although the caliper mounts got changed to the rear of the fork. Forks on both sides got caliper mount brackets from 73-84

There were some miner changes to side cover mounts and rear guard.

This link charts most of the changes and swapability between 74-84
