What exactly are those pilot bikes for? Like pace motorcycles?

Why would they need to modify them like that; couldn’t they just use stock bikes?

...yes...pace bikes...standing position is supposed to give better balance and control at lower speeds - ask any trials rider - and creates a larger wind shadow
...imagine how much exhaust gas the poor fucking cyclists are breathing

I read an article about a Triumph pilot a few years ago, I hadn't realised they still did it ,the article made it sound like they stopped racing this way because they got up to ridiculous speeds for a push bike and it was just so dangerous.

must be a sight to see can you imagine the noise coming out of a 6" exhaust, it would be louder than watching speedway and probably almost as fast!!!
