Got a Yamaha tank..black with gold pinstriping and a decal instead of tank badge. Locking gas cap. Any info on the year/years for this one?

Top one is 1975 XS650B. It fits your description
Didn't the XS500 also have similar tank to the 75 650? Not sure if there are mounting differences.
Yes, a few got that decal. I believe (not 100%) the tanks don’t interchange.

You may have a Special tank. That means body filler had to be applied to the badge area and the decals are custom. For me to be correct, the fuel cap is right of center and it fits the XS650 frame. No standard XS650 tank was single petcock. Only the 3 gal Special, 1980 and later.

Ok thanks for the knowledge. That helps. Am a Honda person so I plan on selling this one but needed some help id'ing it.
On an XS650, the "cups" to hold the tank are on the frame. This tank has the cups... not an XS650 tank.

As soon as I saw the picture of the tank I thought SR500. Look how close the frame cutout in front is to the gas cap. Gave room for the frame oil dipstick.

Yep you are exactly right. After the suggestion I researched sr500 .and got a match.
