Found a mistake in the '78 Yamaha manual... should say re-found... 'cause I knew... :cautious:
Went to measure the springs and they were all too short... by a lot... about a mm.

The correct dimensions are found in the '74-'77 manual.
Tolerance is +0 -2mm. The ones I used are dead on 41.8 and 41mm.
Note: the '78 manual doesn't list a tolerance, which I found odd. That was the memory jog I needed to tell me we've been here before.

And here we are, a fully reconditioned head.
An email yesterday says the rings have cleared customs, so more progress on the horizon.... stay tuned.

Well crap. :banghead:

Rings from Cruzinimage show up this weekend. Bench is nice and clean, figured I'd dirty it up a little and start the top end. Opened up the first box of rings... well fuck... :cussing:

Never had a problem with these guys in the 8 yrs I been buying from 'em... 'till now. I've read horror stories about resolving issues with 'em. Guess I'm 'bout to find out if they're true.

So I guess it'll be another 3-4 wks waiting for another set. Anybody got any XS1 rings layin' around they'd loan me? :er:

When I was doing my own XS1B engine rebuild for the win some, lose some -- 1971 XS1B, one of the the oil rings was missing from the sealed package inside one of the Cruizin Image piston kits. I emailed Cruizin Image and they sent out a new ring set the next day. They trusted me that I hadn't somehow messed up the ring myself and lied about it. I did take pics, but they didn't prove anything. That was the only time I ever ordered anything from them so it wasn't like I was a long-time trusted customer. So, I'd say great customer service, and you should be good.

Good to know. I just set them a (polite) email asking for a replacement. We'll see how it goes.

standard bore?

I have a ton of storage drawers full of all kinds of useful stuff, and just as it appears you do, I haven't labeled any of mine either.

Why do we do that?

Worse yet, similar items end up in far different areas.

Keep up the good work!

And now for something completely different.

This is a cam chain guide from an SR500, used for the frankenguide mod. When cutting the tabs off it, I got lackadaisical and ground into the beefy part... ruining it. That wasn't a problem when I did the guide mod 'cause I had an extra. Hell, they're only 15 bucks at Partzilla.

The other side is still usable, so I bent it to shape and cut that end off. Another bend, a hole and here we are...

Went ahead and used some J B Weld along with the HiLok as a belt-n-suspenders approach. And here we are... I think it'll make a right spiffy chain guard/rub strip.

That came out very nice! Looks like it will be very durable. 😉
