I've trying to bring an XS1B back to life.
And lately been fighting with the engine and carbs.
On idle the bike is excellent, starts first kick cold or hot,
and holds very low rev with no apparent problem.
I believe that if i left her on idle with the gas tank full,
she would burn it all with no problem.
By the spark plugs notice that she was running rich, on both cylinders.
The problem arrives when i try to take it for a ride:
- after around 1/4 mile, I start to feel the engine a little rough
- I park almost immediately and she can no longer hold on idle, I need to rev the bike so I can keep the engine running, and need to kick it 4 or 5 times to get it started again
- Back on the garage, I remove the left spark plug and notice theirs lots of oil in that cylinder. the spark is isolated.
- after cleaning and mounting the spark plug, she has great idle and she starts first kick again
Note 1: I've done this several times always the same result
Note 2: one time, she was 2 weeks cold and started with lots of smoke and even dripping lots of oil by the exhaust while on idle
So I start digging the forum, and found that the next step was to measure engine compression.
Bought a testing tool, and run the test:
- right cylinder : I need to kick 4 times to get the gauge up to 125psi (on the fifth kick she goes back to zero)
- left cylinder (the one with oil leak): 4 kick's and the gauges shows 125psi (If I keep kicking she floats from 120-135psi, does not go back to zero like the other)
I have only done the test in cold, since I've some trouble with a carb bowl.
Questions:
1 - if I do a hot test will the results be much different ?
2 - any conclusion we could take from this test ?
3 - which is the normal on the 5 kick, go back to zero or keep the pressure ?
