This may be a bit long winded but I am obviusly missing something so will relate the history of my problem
I stripped cleaned and rebuilt (exceprt for the throttle shaft bushings and seals) the carbs on my 72 XS2 and following advise from here, purchased genuine Mikuni parts. The bike starts and runs good. The left carb mixture screw had no effect on running. On a test ride the engine didnt want to come back to idle. A further check revealed leakage and play in the left throttle shaft. I assumed that was the issue and disassembled the left carb to repeair the bushing and seals which were shot. Did some damage to the throttle shaft that I havent yet repaired yet. I forgot to put a backing block behind the throttle shaft when I used the impact driver... And yes, i am an idiot!

Found another set of carbs off a working bike. Stripped and cleaned the left carb (no play in the throttle shaft so prudently left it alone for now). Reassembled with the new parts from the the orignal carb. Bike starts and runs well but still the same left idle mixture screw problem. Plus, occasionally the overflow from the left carb will drain if I leave the right petcock on. Pulled the carb and rechecked float level and did a minor adjustment. Started and ran fine with no overflow. Started it last night after several days and the overflow problem is back. Shut the petcocks and started the bike, waited a minute then opened them. No overflow!!!! Let the bike run then shut it off and waited and no overflow.
Going to check it tonight again.
So what am I missing regarding the idle mixture and the overflow?????
