whats the difference between the 447 frame engine gasket kit and the 256 engine gasket kit if any , as you may guess looking to rebuild the 73 tx650 motor that iv had sitting around for yrs also do they all use the same cam chain guide ... if possible want to use as many 1974 xs650 new parts iv accumulated over the years , havnt played with the earlier motors at all

The alt. cover gasket differs as well .....

ahhh,.... thanks thats all good news as got a couple of extra guides that i got of hoos racing a while back and cruz has the gasket kit for the 447 frame , was hoping not to much difference between the 73 tx and the 74 xs but with the one off tx tank wasnt sure , got a spare tank for it yrs ago off flea bay for 10 bucks in really good cond except for the paint , bloke selling was spewing but still sent it , no one else bid as that model was considered a bit of a odd ball here in australia , does this mean every thing else motor wise between the 2 models are interchangible except for the piston kit

Crank and cam in 70-73 are geared 17/34, 74 forward are geared 18/36. Cam chain tensioner assembly in 70-73 uses an idler gear. I think later tensioner assemblies can be installed in 72 and 73 (XS2 and TX650), but that's a guess based on cylinder characteristics.

thanks griz thats good to know , will mean have to get a cam chain to suit the the tx then , if it has a idler wheel probably a slightly longer chain then the later models , will be keeping the tx cam etc but was toying with the idea of rephasing as have a spare rephased 447 cam here but as the cranks are a bit different there goes that idea , will keep orig tensioner assemblies etc , dont want to go overboard on this motor and keep as cheap as possible and use up a few parts , already have a couple of spare vm34 carbs etc ... just looked up ebay and mikes .. ebay sellers try to say 1 chain fits all while mikes say 74 and later are a different pitch ... who is telling the truth as mikes shipping to aust is $$$$$$$ where should be able to get one locally

Can change the cam-sprocket from the 73 TX to the 447 cam.

The pitch of the chain and sprockets is different between the 70-73 and 74 and on 447 engines.

Yes, '74 and later chains are a different pitch AND length. Use the Tsubaki specs (chain number) from Mike's to see if you can source one locally.

had a look at geoffs , he says the same thing about the yrs and pitch , also has one in stock , ebay sellers are both careless and maybe also mixing up between the tx 73 and 74 though some say fit all xs650 from 71-85 ..... also happy new year everyone

mmm .. in that case might rethink about rephasing as easy enough to do the crank , the cam is the $$$$ one

As Skull wrote, it's fairly easy to press the 34T sprocket off a 256 camshaft and replace it with a 36T 447 sprocket in order to use a 447 crank. There's a fine how-to thread on this, and a quick search should turn it up; I'm not sure, but I think mrriggs wrote it. If you go that route you can mount any year 447 cam chain tensioner on your TX650 cylinders: dimensions, gasket surfaces, and mounting holes are the same from the XS2 to the end of production.

damm that means would have to use / buy a 447 crank or could replace the 36T on the rephased cam (was for a 447 motor) with a 34T and so use the 256 crank which will save hunting up another crank ,, as prev said trying to do this one on the cheap , this way could use all the 256 bits .. mmmm... food for thought especially since the 256 cam was a warmer cam
