Hi everyone,

Just bought a XS650 Special 82 in Mothern, France. When I bought the bike and test road the bike it sounded like it was running on one cylinder. The guy I bought it off of decide to replace the points. She started right up and was running smoothly.

I get about 30 to 40 minutes into my ride and I am giving her throttle and she is loosing power. I have no idea why she is like this. I get towed to a place in Colmer, France and determine that it was an electrical issue. The next day I go to a local mechanic shop that works on vespas and other motorcycles to check the voltage of the battery. Reading 9Vs, completely dead, so I buy a brand new battery for the bike. She starts up again. I drive her from Colmar to Dijon France without any issues. She is running well, her idle was a bit high when I stopped for gas but just tuned the pilot screw/idle screw to lower the rpm’s to 1500 rpm’s.

I finally get to Dijon, and I am several blocks way from my hotel and she does the same thing when I was riding. Her power just goes out when I apply the throttle. The guy I bought it off said it could be the regulator rectifier. He used a Yamaha RD 350 for this part.

He also did the permanent magnet alternator swap from this post: https://www.xs650.com/threads/how-t...tor-swap-also-known-as-the-banshee-swap.5536/

I had to finally give up and transport her to Lisbon because I couldn’t keep diagnosing the issue without a garage and or tools/parts to fix her. I know I maybe judge for grabbing a motorcycle and trying to ride her from France to Lisbon but so be it.

What I wanna know is what the community thinks is the issue with her and what I need to do to fix her or where to start.

The main goal of buying this motorcycle, is that she is my donor bike to then create a chopper out of her. I got a Fendland Harley Sporter frame with a ribbed rear fender from him as well. While I am acquiring the parts I wanted to be able to ride her and just enjoy her for the time being. Any advice on where to start on how to fix her or just what could be the main issues would be greatly appreciate.

Yes charging 101; find out if you have all the correct parts that work together, then test that they are all functioning correctly.
a VOM and a small digital voltmeter where you can see it on the handlebars will really help you find the path to happy electrons.
We can help figure it out, if we KNOW what you have and how it's wired. Hint; lots of detailed pics go a long way to our understanding what's going on.

I do not think a PMA system will function with an RD350 reg-rec unit, as - I think - a stock RD350 had an excited field alternator much like the XS650. This could be the root of your battery/charging issue(s).
You were correct. I was getting 18Vs to my battery, had to replace the battery, and the regulator rectifier. Thanks for all the help.
