Good morning / afternoon all

As some will have seen I was tracking down a starter motor gear boss for the bike with the intention of reinstalling the full e starter system, this has now been done with some wonderful help from memebers hear !

However I have got the bike fired up off the electric starter but right away i noticed the dreaded grinding from the clip bouncing and not engaging, I have used a new clip and assembly from yambits so should rule out the clip being the being the issues any help here on this one folks ?

Many thanks
Biggs

Is the clip spring you got fat enough that you had to place it below the designed clip recess?

The "improved Yamaha clip" (changed about 1976) is thick enough that it must sit outside the recess.
Even new aftermarket clips tend towards the "not enough grip on the gear" issue.
The insert a drill bit inside the bend and crimp in a vice trick seems to help improve the grip.
Prolly not what you want to hear with the engine buttoned back up and full of oil.
My experience is that motors with everything just right IE ignition and carbs, have less issues with starter grinding.
I also retain the safety relay for quick starter disengagement as "starter run on" is a thing on some bikes.
