XS650, (XS750/850), Model ID/Year/VIN-Workshop Manuals-Tech Information-Links

I have been looking through this thread as I am looking for another XS650 after selling my TX a number of years ago, the time and effort that has gone into the thread has only to be appreciated.

I would like to ask, some, which may seem daft, questions, but I would rather ask a daft question than get it wrong when the right bike turns up.

I can read the charts and work out the numbering system and whereabouts a bike with a certain number would fit in model wise, and figure out that the code/ model numbers are the engine type.

What I would like to ask, knowing that the engine and frame numbers should match is, are both stamped exactly in the same way?, for example, a 1975 XS650 B would read say 447-123456 on the engine, would it read exactly like that on the frame headstock or would it be stamped in a different configuration? I can't remember how they read on my TX.

Also on the VIN plate/sticker on the head stock, would it have been made up of 17 letters and digits incorporating the frame number?

Finally, would the code number, say 447, be stamped anywhere else on the engine, cylinder head etc.?

Cheers
Robert

Someone else may be able to verify when the 17 didgit code came out and what countries...........

I think they started on the specials on the 80 models.......The early models had the same prefix and no on the head-stock and vin plate/sticker.......In Scotland i think it would be 447 ****** for a 75, but the code is 553, (not sure if the code would be on the Vin plate),depending on if it was a US import, (447), or country import from new.........some codes were the same as the Prefix no and other times they wearn't.............

Pre 74, the same prefix and no went world wide, XS1 were not sold in Europe but the XS1F was and was the XS1B ever where else...............I am not an expert on the early pre 74 models so could be corrected

check out this link......This gu is based in Germany and knows a lot about the XS650

Thanks, 650Skull, I was looking at one the other day and although the engine numbers and frame numbers were the same, which I hoped they would be, because as you say they should be from the factory, the stamping of the numbers on the frame just didn't look like the same typeset.

Anyway too much of a bitsa of a bike for me, so decided not to go for it.

rbt1548,

Post up pics in a thread through the Garage when looking at a bike. Even if it is before buying it, we will help with Id, if a pic of the stamped no's on the head is shown, there is a good chance someone will tell you if they look factory or there an aftermarket job

Hi 650Skull, thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Does 1548 reference the battle of St Monans??

As for the 1548, I'm sorry but the reference is not something as interesting as the battle on the Fife coast, it was, in fact, my Fire Service No., as I had it for 34 years before retiring, I'm not likely to forget it :), once retired I went as an instructor for the Gvt. run Fire Service College to the Middle East for about 6 years and went to and met some great people in various places, Kuwait, Saudi, Iran, Libya. If anyone was leaving messages or any gear of theirs we just used to stick on our own ID and I just used to stick on 'rbt1548', seemed simpler than using a long No.

I mentioned in a previous post that I had had a 1973 TX which I restored from a box of bits with tons missing, I regret selling it, but like a lot of people, one wage, a family and a mortgage I had to, but that's life. I would love another, so search goes on, below is a pic of my TX when I finished it.

rtb1548, very nice restoration work. I too would have been sad having to sell it. About what year was the restoration work done? I had an XS1B in the late 80s, but my restoration work made it worse .

Hi Paul, ha, ha! we've all done that:whistle:.
It was done round about 2000/1, getting the bits was a bit of a struggle, although I got the tank brand new, complete, for £45 which was a bonus.
I need to get another XS650, not necessarily a TX, there is a TX for sale in a dealers at £7500 which, frankly is just plain daft and a few other 650's which look as though they have been stuck together . As I said, the search goes on.

hey guys, I just piced up a 71yamhaRT1 360 enduro, but its hard to read the year on the tag, and I got it thru a friend, he had got it from a tow yard 10 tears ago and I have all the proper paperwork to get tags for it, and title it in my name, FUN right.... but I have to put the year on the paperwork for the dmv, the deal is when I look for parts for a 71 , like carb rebuild kit, or decomresion valve, I find alot of parts for a 71 are not correct, can someone help me decode the vin???

360 & 400 cc VIN Numbers (yamaha-enduros.com)

found this, it says its a 71. but like i said when I try and look up parts for it they dont match all to well, at least on ebay, but ive had that problem with ebay before. I got the bike in runiing condition and all the cableas freed up, the injection pump working and flowing 2 stroke oil to the intake port, ,it does have a few pin holes in the bottom of the tank, trying to decide weather to brase them or use tank sealer, Ive neve had any luck with the sealer lasting to long... its a ablack and red bike ,if someon has a tank that would be amaxing, or it needs two tank badges, shees 36.00 each on ebay for reproductions... the bike only has like 2000 original miles on it, and so far seems in good shape, I rebuilt the carb and the petcock, and n=put new points in it and cleaned it up, it starts and runs ,but when you try to get on it, it falls on its face like its flooding, maybe the needle and seat are bypassing, bucause if you turrn the petcock off it will start to run like a raped ape for 20 seconds, then die from no fuel... hmmm???

Can someone help me confirm if I have a Tx650. Also I would like to spray bike in original colour which I thought would be blue but scratching under current paint it looks orange?? Side covers also don’t seem to be Tx

Hi there 2xs. Where in NZ are you located? Any great scenery nearby?

Do you have any documentation to show where this bike originally came from? Was it originally sold in NZ, or was it a later import. Regarding the colour, it is common to spray red over yellow to try and duplicate Ferrari red. So the red and yellow may be the same age.

Enjoy your bike.

Hi 2XS, from your photo, the frame number looks like 650-21788. There's frame & engine number tables in the Tech section which should tell you what you have. Unfortunately, I couldn't find that number, makes me wonder if yours is an original frame. Probably me being blind. Wots the engine number?

Engine and frame numbers match s650217183 and I agree that the tables at the beginning of this thread don’t seem to go up to this number? I know the history of this bike to a point. It was my fathers who passed away 30 years ago and the bike has sat in the back barn on our farm in Tasmania rusting away . Mum recently decided to sell up so I had the bike sent over to nz. Thought it would be a good sentimental project. Unfortunately it has no papers, they were either lost or Dad never had any to begin with.
Interesting about the yellow as a first coat under red, makes sense still thought I might have seen some original paint somewhere? Photos of bike are as dad had it 30 years ago
