Do I really have to take the front sprocket off?
Can't see why?Do I really have to take the front sprocket off?
That chain guard under the sprocket. I had to take the chain off. Can't see why?
Glad I suggested that. I've seen it on a few bikes over the years.Pickup coil. A little heat and its open circuit.
I’ve been carrying one with me. Now, what did I do with it?
Yes, a good one.Glad I suggested that. I've seen it on a few bikes over the years.
Question from me now is - When all the near 50 year old pick ups have gone faulty, what happens then? There's a Gonzo unit to replace the TCI box. But as far as I'm aware, there's no new pick up available.Yes, a good one.
Didn't mean to sound snippy. That chain guard under the sprocket. I had to take the chain off.
It runs again. I’ll finish reassembling tomorrow evening.
Didn't mean to sound snippy. I was thinking the wires ran under the chain guard. Oh well, good opportunity to check sprocket nut torque. Glad you're running. Very entertaining thread. Can't see why?

Apologies in advance, that's a whole new thread topic.
Just what I was thinking Bob.Question from me now is - When all the near 50 year old pick ups have gone faulty, what happens then? There's a Gonzo unit to replace the TCI box. But as far as I'm aware, there's no new pick up available.
I guess Jim will have to start rewiring those too, along with the rotors.![]()
Nope! The outer sleeve is broken in one spot aft of the sprocket. The wires inside are clean and untouched. I only applied heat to the module itself and the stator frame to induce failure. It didn’t take very much heat. When you get the old one off dissect the harness where it passes under the sprocket I'll bet you find a near broken in two pick up wire there.
I had the same failure a very long time ago. The used spare came from 650 Central right after it was passed from John Zelna and before it was in the hands of Michael Morse. It wasn’t easy to find back then. That may have been as long as 25 years ago.Question from me now is - When all the near 50 year old pick ups have gone faulty, what happens then?
AFAIK, the twin pickup * design is unique (or almost so) to the XS650 TCI ignition. I can't think it's impossible to mount two modern pick ups in a custom mount to replicate the original. I don't know of a ready made modern equivalent. But anyway I understand the spacing between the pick up coils is critical in the TCI ignition advance/retard function.I had the same failure a very long time ago. Everybody buys a Boyer-Bransden ignition unit.Question from me now is - When all the near 50 year old pick ups have gone faulty, what happens then?
Arguably it's an inferior choice to fit to a TCI equipped bike though.Everybody buys a Boyer-Bransden ignition unit.
I tend to believe the stock TCI XS650 ignition is superior to anything else, price considered. It’s extremely robust.Arguably it's an inferior choice to fit to a TCI equipped bike though.
Agreed on both points.I tend to believe the stock TCI XS650 ignition is superior to anything else, price considered. It’s extremely robust.
A single pickup can be used with the GN250 TCI box.

* They're Hall Sensors? AI says not. Says they're more likely reed switch sensors. I don't know.
Good stuff guys. ThanksI tend to believe the stock TCI XS650 ignition is superior to anything else, price considered. It’s extremely robust.
