Hello to all.
Great info on this site! A world of knowledge. So I was wondering if anyone could help me out here.
I have no bracket where the plastic base of the front of my seat slides into. Would anyone have a picture of this bracket or part number or even better the actual bracket! Its located at the back of the tank area? I just cant see it on any microfiche diagrams of body /frame parts or in my manual (CLYMER)
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Paddy

Part #20 damper keeps it from flopping around?

Yes, welded to frame.
Not familiar with this but the #20 damper should be flipped upside down from how it shows in the seat pic, slips inside the frame bracket?

Thank you all for your replies

I was looking at the same diagrams but my fram doesn't look the same.

For some reason my bike has no welded crossbar, which you think would be there or evidence of it being there. The bike only has 19k miles on it. Very clean and original.

Being an American import and being an XS850 special may have something to do with it? This bike also has the front calipers only mounted on by one bolt with wedged shaped pads. I'll post a pic shortly

Here are some pics. As you can see no cross bar.

Hows your VIN's? do they match an 80? a 81 special frame.

stranger things.....
Build date does NOT equal model year, Typically Yamaha starts building the next model year in July.
An 81 XS850 SH frame

My build date says 11 month 1979 which I assume is an 80 model. VIN # 3J2011657.

My frame DOES "look" like the XS750F frame

In my manual it says
1980 XS850G, LG, SG
1981 XS850H ,LH, SH

cross member further back is round like 81 frame?
80 seat one year only
This Yamaha 3J2-W2472-00-00 DOUBLE SEAT ASSEMBLY fits the following models and components:
Yamaha Motorcycle 1980 XS850SG Seat
81 seat one year only
This Yamaha 4R2-W2472-00-00 DOUBLE SEAT ASSEMBLY fits the following models and components:
Yamaha Motorcycle 1981 XS850SH Seat
but it could be as minor as the cover pattern.

No year given. or if it's standard or special.
That's about all I got. If that IS the bracket, what do those bolts go into?

Thank you for the info. I'll use this to try to get to the bottom of it. I'll get back to you tonight after I do some more research with what you've unearthed.
Cheers
Paddy

Jim that is correct but mine is a standard. It has a more conventional hinge seat pan with key latch on left side similar to my 1980 XS 650.

Sorry for not getting back to you guys. I'm using my phone and there seems to be some glitches.

Anyway, yes you are correct. It's an 850 special. The Key is on the throttle side and has 2 x lock tabs under the seat at the rear. The plastic seat base has the tounge but no cross bar for it to hook under. I believe the seat has been recovered at some stage but can't confirm if it is the original seat. There are no part numbers at all.
I think the only solution would be to fabricate a cross bar and weld it to the frame. It's a fairly original specimen and didn't want to ruin its originality. Unless I have the wrong seat I can't see any other solution.

HI Signal.
Would you have a pic of the underside of your seat and frame area where the seat hooks under if you have an 850? Cheers Paddy

Yes, both of those seats in the 1st 2 links are the same as mine. The last link for the bracket I think goes at the rear of he seat but for a different model perhaps. One of the frame schematics in a recent reply shows the cross bar but I can't seem to identify my exact fram model. Is it possible it had an engine swap?

Maybe we had the pic of the wrong frame up before; this is the pic of XS850SG and it shows no crossbar for the seat tongue:

Perhaps Yamaha used the same seat base on multiple models. The frame above appears to have a seat hinge on the right side, but who knows???
