Yam_Tech314's official build thread

The fender that's on now will be getting tossed at some point. I really just wanted it there to stabilize the forks. I'm gonna put on a low profile paintable fender to match and it'll be cool. With the seat being on the bike I can finally see the thing as a whole machine and it forced me to make a decision on paint. I'm so F@#$ing tired of looking at the primer gray. Makes the bike look like shit. I did too much for it to look like shit. So it's getting a damn good paint job and I'm gonna be doing it sooner than later.

There might be members here who would like the old fender for the shipping $ before you just toss it . Post it in classifieds first.

For sure. I should've worded that differently. I try not to throw away things that still have a purpose. I'm sure someone here will want it when I'm done with it.

I am currently befuddled. I'm thinking my turn signal relay is working because when I ground out my left or right signals for the rear they make the relay go nuts. But no matter how I wire up the integrated tail light/signal combo I can't get a flash. I just get solid right and solid left. Now... It's been awhile since I've messed with a turn signal relay, and electrical is far from my strongest skill.

My front signals not being hooked up wouldn't make them solid, they'd just make it blink faster, right??

So I'm still figuring it all out. Not sure this set of lights is gonna work. There's built in relays on the front signals... And I think that's causing my rears to remain solid. Should have just kept it simple and went with regular signals. I'm still going to try to figure this out because it will streamline the bike. But if not there's always a known good back up plan.

I also got the rear suspension set up today. I'm also not sure I'm in love with it. Perhaps it'll grow on me. Perhaps the gray tank really still throws off the vision.

Been a long time since I chased trons but I do remember timed relays driving timed relays doesn't work real well. Are thos front flashers supposed to drive the rears as well?

To my knowledge no. I started wiring them all up as a group to the rear side of the harness but ran out of time. I'll get it figured out. They were CHEAP. Which is usually all you need to know... For now I'm just trying to get it all out together so I can visualize some sense of finality. I may have rushed a bit. I'm taking a step back to reconvene. The lighting will likely change.

I'm ditching the signals I bought for a nicer pair. I'm doing some struggling today. Trying to install my headlight bucket fully and realized I'd have to remove the brackets. Which means removing forks. And fender. And front wheel... Jeez...

Got my HL adjustment bolt and bracket on no problem. Now I'm struggling so bad with trying to reinstall the "YAMAHA" front emblem into the triple trees... I don't remember ever struggling this much before. WTF am I doing wrong?? Any tips?

If I have the order right, this is how I'm trying to install the works...

Lower tree, thick washer, grommet, emblem, chrome retainer, bucket tube thing, then grommet. I know last time I went down this road I had my ears upside down. that's not the problem this time.

Parts fische doesn't show a washer in that mix of parts that I can see. That was my error I'm guessing. Seems a bit loose without it there, and they fell out when I removed everything so I still don't know. But idk how much more patience I have for it at the moment. This old bike is really making me question my choices in life.

Did you happen to get all that in place and THEN tighten down your steering stem stuff? For the life of me I can't get the top part of the ears to slide in without spitting out the grommets. Unless I remove that bottom washer.
I really don't know how I did it without issues the first time 🤷

***EDIT. I see now your emblem isn't in place in that pic. So that's gonna be spaced differently.

.... This old bike is really making me question my choices in life.
First question what drove you to this old bike... ;)
Patience grasshopper. We do this with a vision of the endgame. I am pretty sure you have another bike to ride, think, unwind. I have thought step by step my adventure XS650 as I recuperate and I am sure I am going to find snags in my plans.

I'm switching to all chrome ears and rolling with it. I don't care for how the French blue broke up the front end, and trying to paint these black ended miserably.

I'm missing hardware anyways so I'll need to get stuff no matter what. Anyone got all the stuff Id need before I drop the $50 on a nice eBay set I found?

Drop the ear idea...? Notice the headlight mounts.
