Yam_Tech314's official build thread

The bike will never look the same again after this process. I'm ready.

Got everything down to bare metal today.

I Used a Harbor freight dent puller to get the dents to a workable size and was happy I bought a wire wheel for the angle grinder. Made me 3X more predictive.

This project was definitely more involved than I realized. But that's how firsts go.

This is my VERY first time attempting body work and final finish paint.

It'll also be my first time doing striping on ANYTHING. I'll be using striping tape.

This is full of a ton of firsts. But we are in it now!!!

Body putty being applied. Working on a 2nd run on it now. It's pretty easy to sand off more than you need to lol. I'm learning a new skill. Failure is inevitable. But trying again and again is the beauty of Bondo. I don't have to get it right the first time.

The dent pulling kit worked way better than expected. I was able to lessen the severity of almost every dent on all the pieces. The filler is likely not going to give me a factory finish because of my amateur status. But once it's got primer on it we will see what needs to be feathered in and try our best to get it close.

How crazy is it that I got the exact paint you recommended without even looking at that link you posted?!? (I didn't look because I already purchased the clear coat by the time this message was posted...) I feel pretty good knowin' I got the good stuff. All the materials in that picture came out to around $400. If I'm gonna achieve my goal of finishing this bike by the end of the year I gotta do it right, and I gotta spend some money...

So far this process is coming along slowly, but very nicely.

Got some more work done on the body work this weekend.

Still messing around a little with building up the primer to hide very small imperfections in the gas tank. I did the right thing and filled in the dent even more with some Icing. It's much much better than the previous attempt.

First coat of base coat is on the side covers and things are looking really good.

I'm definitely impressed with my first attempt at paint and body work. More updates to come as I find time to get the work done.

They’re actually dents from fork tubes hitting the tank. None of the 6 tanks I have here have them. Fill them up & make them smooth.🏍️
Woah. That's news to me. Lol.

It's a little late for that... I put the base coat on already.

I might fix it. I'm undecided. This is my first body work project and I'm already over 24hrs into it. I'm TIRED. I wonder what has to happen for the forks to hit the tank hard enough to dent it that bad.
