Yam_Tech314's official build thread

They're perfectly identical. I thought they were there from the factory to clear the handlebars/triple tree. Given that they're 100% identical I'm leaving em' alone. But I wondered the same.
Now that you know they're not supposed to be there I highly suggest you fix 'em, otherwise they'll always bug you.

This happens when the steering stops are busted off the frame (neck) or the lower triple tree. Best you check yours to see if they're intact.
They're definitely there. That's what's so strange about this all... The bike has a front end conversion on it... I'm wondering if the tank came off of a different bike in the past...

Been a long time since I had any bike updates. I been busy moving, changing jobs, paying off debts, life stuff. You know how it goes!

I still haven't found time to work on the bike but Ive been pushing forward on getting a space made up to do just that.

I had to gut this whole shed at my new rental home. Mouse crap everywhere. I wore a mask and protected myself from the nasty illnesses airborn mouse dirt can bring.

It's come a long way in the last month.

The 'before' pictures aren't the greatest, but I couldn't even stand in the shed. It was packed full of random stuff that was just either left here when the old tenant left, or remnants of the owners belongings that never got touched because the previous tenants didn't use the shed...

Now it's part of my lease and I was given permission to remove all of it and boy did I... I cleaned everything. EVERYTHING. And repackaged it so it would be safe to go to the basement... And I got to work on putting in a work bench and getting lighting. It's ready for bikes to call it home and I'm ready to get back to painting the Yamaha so I can move on to reconditioning the CB900C engine throughout the spring.

Temporary leg extension for proof of concept

Ledger boards installed for added support and temporary legs removed.

I ended up beefing up the single leg and tying it into the wall later on. The whole bench holds 300lbs like nothing. I'd say it'll do just fine.

Power source is just an extension cord plugged into the girlfriends home office but you gotta work with what's available. I just need to be sure I don't overload anything.

It's been a busy month.

I believe @5twins requested more shelf action... I have done it. Really feeling good about the spring time. I'll be ready to finish the paint on the XS and have the CB900 motor ready to be built.

Spent some time sanding down the cracked appearance on my first attempt at body work on the tank from the past summer/fall. Finally had some free time where I found myself twiddling my thumbs and thought "I KNOW WHAT I CAN DO!"

I got it down to the body filler and figured it's gonna be best to add some more and really try and fine tune the shape to match. Before sanding I noticed a flat area and figured if I'm already sanding it down I need to try and get it even better than my first attempt. Gotta keep trying til you get stuff right sometimes. Here's where I'm stopping for the night.

Really rough first application of the body filler this go around so that I can really let it sit and cure while I go to work tonight. Will try to get some sanding in tomorrow. I'll be forced to hand sand it all because the DA sander is at my mom and dad's house. Oh well. Maybe that'll force me to not remove too much material. That was my prior error. I've also elected to fill in the dents that the forks created sometime in its previous life.

It's rough for now for sure. But the more I sand and carefully sculpt the better things will be as a final result. I'm actually glad I painted the tank as it revealed my beginner mistakes. Allowing me to sand away only the problem areas and smooth it all out as an entire unit later on. I'll probably get it just right, scuff it all down to a base primer coat, prime it two or three times. And see how I feel after a wet sand of the primer coat.

Trying to remind myself that "Nothing worth doing is easy..."
