Z8 Needle Jet

Went through the checklist. Cam chain tensioner, valves, plug gap, timing then vacuum synced carbs. They were off a fuzz and it actually helped with the idle. I’m right on the borderline of the revs but it seems to have calmed down quite a bit. Perhaps one of the gurus at the rally can contribute to something I may be missing. I just can’t believe it was running great when I got here then everything went to s***. Thanks to 5T and Jim for helping out with this issue. Nothing like working right down to the wire…

It sounds like your new advance springs are too weak, allowing the motor to advance too early and easily? Maybe put the one old good spring back on and try it? If still too weak, then maybe clip one coil off the old spring to stiffen it up?

Well, who knows, they're certainly acting like they are. Like I said, I'd put the one good original back on with one of the new ones, then if it's still acting up, shorten the old original by one loop to stiffen it up. You don't want to make the springs too stiff or you introduce a whole different and new set of issues. The ignition won't advance soon enough or possibly not at all, or it won't advance until the RPMs are higher and then go full advance all at once. Either way, the bike will not run right, being rather "flat" or bogging until the advance finally happens.

I shortened up the old spring and everything seems to be good. Idled and ran better so just need a little shakedown run to be sure then it’s load up to leave in the morning for Arkansas. I want to say thanks again to 5T for his suggestions. I was worried I’d have to ride a different bike at the rally. NBD but I’d have felt a little out of place on my big bike.
