Zinc chain in gas tank?

I recently bought a new gas cap for my project. I have a P-Nut tank from Lowbrow, and it has the British style filler on it and therefore I purchased a gas cap to fit. The cap came with a gold cad plated chain lanyard that is too short for my liking and I would like to use a zinc plated/galvanized chain in its place. Will it cause any problems? I am wondering if maybe gold cad plating is cheaper & that's why it was used?
