My 1979 clutch slips excessively under hard acceleration, especially in high gear. The spec for the 1979 is 7 friction plates and 6 steel, but I've got 6 and 5. Can someone mic the thickness of their 7/6 clutch pack so i can compare to my own. My friction and steel plates mic perfect individually at .118 and .055, but i can't tell if someone swapped in a late 1980-83 style 6/5 clutch or if I am actually missing a friction and a steel plate.

The plate thickness was the same for the 7/6 and 6/5.
The schematic shows the 6/5 arrangement for the 78SE and 79 SF.
If you'll look at the schematic for the 77D you can see the difference.
It won't have the compression spring, 2 friction plates smooth and 1 with drive teeth.
Thats probably as clear as mud.

Inspect the inner basket. If it's the later one with less plates, it will have a bottom spring loaded steel plate retained by a wire and there will be a slot cut into the teeth of the hub for that wire to fit into.

thank you! It appears I have a ring retained by a type of clip holding the first steel plate against the clutch boss. I assume this is a 6/5 late model assembly in my 79 SF.
