I am new to this site and was wondering if there were any other members who are artists or musicians? I am a life long mixed media artist, with my current favorite media being acrylic on canvas. I am also a musician of 20+ yrs and am currently in two bands. The first is a contmeporary hard rock band which gigs out regularly, the second being a power trio which I just formed in order to satisfy my love of playing HEAVY music such as Saint Vitus, The Obssesed, Weedeater,Black Sabbath, Down etc. I play bass in the first band and I do all the guitars(rhythym and lead) and vocals for the second. Respond back and let me know what your creative hobbies are(other than bulding XS's). I'd like to know about your favorite media, Or the type of music/ instrument you play.

Welcome, TCB!

Well, "musician" is a strong term to use in my case, but I have been teaching myself fingerstyle/chord-melody guitar since about 2003... mainly acoustic. I never play for anyone else - too timid - but try to get an occasional listenable recording pass at a piece now and then, and have a handful of originals in various states of "incompletion". I also have too many guitars for my ability, the most recent being a ShabbyChic baritone acoustic, which I love. I also do a bit of creative writing from time to time.

Oh, and RedRooster on here is a great sculptor, and also writes well. I won't presume to speak for him, but he has links to his site and blog on his signature, I believe.

Metal butcher. Mainly aluminum and stainless. I like bronze also but it has gotten very expensive and sales are slow. I make a lot of mobiles as well as static sculpture. www.stevenhaasmobiles.com

I've been playing the Irish whistle for a while. The penny, tin whistle is you like. I've always liked traditional Scotch/Irish instruments and tunes.

I spent most of my regular life as a secretly frustrated musician. But if I knew 30 yrs ago what I know now, I'd have been famous.

It's foolish to be an artist if you aren't famous, and pathetic to be an artist who isn't famous.

I make things, largely of wood, and some metal as well. Mostly turned and carved vessels. I travel the world teaching, and have work in 25 or so museums, seven pieces in the Smithsonian American Museum of Art. Its kept me from working for anyone for almost 30 years. :)Going next week to work with a group of some of the best blacksmith/artist/woodturners/carvers and sculptors/ A whole week of making, eating, learning in the mountains of NC. :)

More of a music fan (and live music) these days, but used to play a lot before we had kids. Guitar, dobro (another one :) ) and pretty good harmonica player. These days we mostly cheer on our son, who is almost finished with his doctorate in music performance-percussion. Specializes in marimba,xylophone/vibes, and timpani. He also teaches and writes a lot of marching, drum and bugle corp stuff, and plays in a salsa band some.

seven pieces in the Smithsonian American Museum of Art.

Something that I contributed to is in the Smithsonian permanent collection. A gizmo, not necessarily a work of art :) Not my thing alone, but I was part of the team that made it. Very satisfying to get that recognition. Recognition is the justification for working in the arts, I think, but that's too complicated to get into at the moment :D

On a scale of artistic/creativity from one to ten, I am almost a 10. I love "creating" things :D

Writer, filmmaker, musician---

Written a few books and screenplays, and over 200 articles.

Shot first film awhile back, it's won a bunch of awards and we just signed a distribution deal.

Self-taught to work with synthesizers and released 2 electronica albums several years ago.....but haven't created a tune in a long time. Been busy with college and day trading. I am thinking about taking up electric guitar soon.

I'm not an artist but loved to draw when I was younger and still doodle in spare time.

That is really cool Hooktool!!
I have always been mesmerized by early American life. I even have a degree in it. So primitive arts, such as blacksmithing, wood working in early form and Native American designs intrigue me so.
Is that Walnut vessel made from a burl?

I agree, hooktool, shaas and others! There is a lot of talent diversity on this forum, for sure!

You artisans remind me that I completely forgot to mention my past part-time woodworking endeavors, which mainly involved restoration of early American and European wood clock cases, as well as some furniture, and building a reproduction here and there. Some years ago, I was named one of the Top 200 American Craftsman by Early American Life magazine, and one of my clock reproductions was pictured in Colonial Homes magazine. I have a lot more photos to upload, but have not found the time to scan them. Here are a few samples.

I know what you mean, metal and wood work can and is done with old methods. The work I do and the metal workers I'll be with this week use some pretty state of the art stuff. Huge hydraulic presses, tig welders etc. My lathe is made in Australia to my specs, and is way beyond what was available even 20 years ago, though the basic function hasn't changed at all.

The walnut is not a burl, just out of a straight section of tree, but I do use some burl when I find pieces that suit me.

It's interesting to see and hear about what people do. Good thread.

TCB71 - Greetings from Mid Rochester ! I took painting lessons from this guy for a few years, (link attached). Check his stuff out. Been wondering if his style would look good on a gas tank. Make sure you take some time out from that rock 'n roll to wrench on your XS !
