yes, the seal can be stretched over the metal "dish"without removing it, warm and well lubed 
is helpful. Getting the spring compressed and the retainer in and out is always fun. I tend to clamp compress it kind of half in a vice. Never hurts to clean that small convoluted venting path when you have it apart.

You can almost double the stretch of a rubber seal by puttin' it in boiling water for a few minutes. Caution, it gets HOT
