What have you done to your XS today?

Lol, parts orders always expand.

I've been organizing the garage, so that I can work on the XS. I've needed a bigger toolbox and found one for a steal. Kennedy 44" roller with top box, $200 on facebook. Drawers were sitting crooked, all I had to do was take the drawers out and reseat the slide rails. Now they all open and close as they should.

Also finished drilling out the Radian axle adjusters, milling the axle slot larger, and removing the anodizing on the bore of the Cognito brake mount / spacer so the CB750 axle will fit. By milling I of course mean using about 12 dremel cutoff wheels to get the job done then finishing with a half-round file. No pic, who cares!

XS back on the lift for oil change a few other things. The rowdy little 750 is a little too rowdy for the clutch so back in to the right side cover. New clutch plates, springs ordered. Installing the 1 piece push rod too. Checked valve clearances too. Pretty right on. Ordered VC gaskets too as the orings were a little drippy.
I made a neoprene rubber sump gasket that I won’t be putting back on as it swelled pretty bad. Need a firmer material.
Very happy with the HT sump filter and the side cover filter/cooler kit.
ATC she’s in pretty good shape, just working out bugs and making improvements! How do these plugs look? They are B8ES. Got the right 7s on order too. Going for a Father’s Day ride tomorrow on the street triple. Right tool for the job. Couple hundred miles of wide open space, eastern OR.

Who is the painter? Are you getting the tank lined? Just curious.

Yea, went and saw the painter 45 min drive and glad I did. Big Yamaha fan. I got allot of scoop on what's what/ Yamaha (and 650) in the area had a nice chat, looked at my tank, etc. Showed me a little 'secret sauce he used on that '72 custom 60 and the other bikes in that Yamaha short film promo. Apparently the builder, Hagemann lived in Tampa and a big Yamaha fan. He apparently won, beat out many known custom builders around the country for this Yamaha project, subsidized by Yamaha: https://www.pipeburn.com/yamaha-xs650-xsr700-greg-hageman/ Anyway, I am going to finish cleaning out, pressure test that tank then go the Por-15 route before giving it to a painter (I have two others in my town...all withing $100 price range of each other). Got home yesterday and actually spent some hours cleaning, sanding, cleaning, cleaning frame. I think petrified dirt grows back overnight on these frames

.That's what I did. Today, finish frame paint prep and mask off my "paint booth"...and see if my bicycle work stand hols my 650 frame.

A Bit More Progress
I was looking at all the chrome on the front end and remembered I had a black headlight shell on the shelf. Switched it out and like it better. The black one better defines the different parts the the front end in my view.
Also saw it was deeper than the usual light for easier connections I hope. (YHA 135.)

Today I installed the mini turn lights, polished and rebuilt the rear caliper and finished up the handle bars and controls. My usual Magura clutch lever and perch did not match the master cyl and lever. Could not live with a mismatch like that, so I used Motion-Pro instead. Seems just OK and nothing more. Total handle bar width measures 35". Frame modifications, tank, and seat are next. This is the longest I`ve ever took to build anything.:shootme:

Well, It's a Start, but I am Finished
Spent a couple hours getting this case much more presentable. Got up to 800 grit and then Autosol. It may get more attention when it is installed as the right side is still untouched and will have to be done on the bike.

Lakeview, is that chrome headlight bucket just a standard Special item? And where are you getting the "YHA 135" and "YHA 127" numbers from? Are they just stamped into the bucket somewhere?

My inspiration (lakeview)...OK, today's sneak peek : 1st side and bottom with DK. Grey Rustoleum # 2089 hi-zink primer. I overlapped some of the heavy sanded areas on bottom and inside the rear wheel area as the primer is sandable. It didn't go on all that thick. It was dry in 15-30 mins..dry to touch 1 hr. Re-cote w/in 1 hour or after 48 hours. Done with both sides, bottom now. Will flip it over in 2 days and spry down from the top...Semi-gloss top coat this week end. Humm, my gas tank boiler-outer can't take me until next month...that top coat is Rustoleum #33894 Black Semi-Gloss Protective Advanced Formula. Amazon is best bet to purchase. The primer i found at Lowes.

Prob not really a PN, more like a model number.

I don't recall which part number is which, but as I recall it, the deeper bucket is either an XS750, XS850 or XS11 part (perhaps all three in fact) - and yet it fits the XS650 headlight ears perfectly but it is an inch or two deeper making the perennial packing of the wiring into the tiny 650 bucket so much easier.

I got one on-line for my Cafe build - to which I will return shortly.
