PDEDSE,
Does your bike have vacuum operated petcocks? I experienced a similar situation on my 79. I replaced the vacuum hose that operated the petcocks and it curred the issue. I believe that as the engine warmed up and softened the old hoses, the vacuum thru the hose caused them to collapse...
WheninXS,
Thanks so much for the encouragement to turn the cam back a tooth even when it went against the logic of everything I had been reading. I buttoned up everything yesterday, put the engine back I to the frame and let it sit overnight. This afternoon I came home from work, wired up a...
That would be fantastic. I tried very hard not to loose them in the rebuilding process but I wasn't think when I took the weights off last night and when I remembered and went back to look, sure enough one was missing.
Jon
WhenInXS,
When I removed my rocker box to check the cam alignment, I also slipped the cam backward a tooth to see if I simple misaliged the cam. When I looked at it, the mark on the right was clearly below the machined surface and the mark on the left was also past noon in the clockwise...
When I installed by re-phased engine, I also experienced kick backs on every attempt to start it. I retard the timing as much as possible but still no relief. It did start and run for just a second or two in the 30-40 attempts. The final kick back one was so sever that it badly sprained by...
WhenInXS - Can you tell me where you went wrong with the ignition which was the cause for the original difficulty in starting the engine? Did you pull the rocker box and slip the cam chain backward/forward?
Jon
Welcome. It sounds like you have done a great deal of research before posting this series of questions. I just finished a rephased engine and I am currently working to diagnosis a timing and ignition issue which caused the engine to fire ever so slightly to early. Based on my experience, I would...
How would I go about confirming the initial idle timing is set at 0 degrees with an electronic ignition? I assume that I would need to use a continuity test somehow with a Pamco ignition.
Jon
If this is the case, do you suggest that I retard the timing as much as possible for the initial kick starting attempts? I have also been considering just attempting to push start it.
Jon
So after nursing my ankle back to nearly new condition, I decided the best approach to making sure the cam was right was to simply re-open the rocker box. I set cylinder #1 at TDC and put the cam chain into place. [/IMG]. As you can see, the mark on the left side of the cam is not exactly...
When I installed the backing plate of the advance assembly, the mark that Hugh painted yellow is not pointing toward 7 o'clock as his does in the picture from his blog post above. Mine is pointing in the direction of 9 o'clock. I tried to get it fired last weekend and I could not retard the...
