Good idea, I'll do that. thanks

    Charging problem - bad rec/reg?

I fitted the new rectifier/ regulator and now it charges without a problem. I re-checked the diode readings on the old rec/reg and only one of the three red/white connections gave me a duff reading, so not sure why I got the readings I did first time round. Either way, the rec/reg was toast as...

    Charging problem - bad rec/reg?

Thanks Gary. I've ordered a new rectifier/regulator and I'll get back to it once that is wired up. I'll let you know how I get on.... Thanks, Brett

    Charging problem - bad rec/reg?

Thanks Gary. I don't really believe the 2.8 ohms thing either. I guess the tests with the engine running will show if the rotor is providing charge. Grounding the green wire to the rec/reg should show up the rotor as bad if the volts across the battery don't increase. Is that correct? I've...

    Charging problem - bad rec/reg?

sorry - it's an 1981 xs650 with all new and simplified wiring.

    Charging problem - bad rec/reg?

After the first 50 miles since I built my bike, the battery died (Shorai lithium) and the bike would not kick start. I charged the battery and tested the voltage across the battery and it's not charging (12.5 volts at idle and the same at 2000rpm). I've gone through most of the usual checks...

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

I bought and fitted another TCI ignitor and it started second kick! So it was the ignitor all along. (Even used, ignitors are not cheap so I'm glad it worked). Out of interest, I tested the new ignitor for continuity between the ground and red wires and there was none, so this confirms that the...

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Thanks xjwmx, but still found nothing. I tested the pickup and both coils seem ok. Over 700 between black and either of the other two, over 1400 between orange and black. I tried a magnet over each of the pickup coils and got a fluctuating reading for Ohms and voltage. With the ignition off, and...

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Thanks xjwmx. I'll check the pickup in more detail first then. I got about 730 between the black and the others. I'll check between the grey and orange and do the magnet swipe test. The rotor tested bad after I rebuilt the engine so I had the rotor and stator re-wound after it was confirmed...

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Ok. I've spent a few more hours trying to understand what the problem is. I've checked everything I can think of. I've checked the old loom and all the common connections/colours are the same. I keep going through it, expecting to find some stupid mistake, but can't find anything. I had made...

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Thanks Leo. There's only 6 wires on my TCI box , it didn't have the sidestand cutout. (as can just be seen from the photo of the TCI in my first post on this thread)

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

The B/W wire between the pick up to the ignitor? Thanks, I'll try it when I get back to the bike in the morning. I've already tried it with and without the pick up connected altogether and the results were the same.

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Retired gentleman. "Have you taken out a spark plug (ground the body)and tried to view the spark in a darkened garage/shed, to confirm there is no spark at all, or a weak spark?" Yes, two months ago and there was no spark. See the last post here...

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Thanks Yamaman. It still might not be the problem. If it is faulty, I could have damaged it by something i did wrong when wiring up, or trying to start it for the first time. Who knows, I'll work it out.

Trying to test TCI ignition unit

Thanks for your advice. JD. As you say "The referenced procedure does not say anything about pulling it off the board first", and it does test as bad, but I tend to agree with retired gentleman: probably the only way to test it properly is off the board. I'm reluctant to do this though because...
