    78 xs650 rear brake bleed

I put up with very weak rear disc brakes on my 78 xs650 cafe for about a year. When I was building my project a couple of years ago, I pulled the OEM rear brake master cylinder off for a Mike's XS unit as the original unit was in bad shape from having sat for about 20 years. I never could get...

    stuttering problem

Mikuni VM34 carbs don't have diaphragms. I went with them because the original B38 CV carbs were always giving me grief. I will do the plug test this weekend.

    stuttering problem

I actually printed up the Mikuni VM34 carb manual and followed it. It was a very good guide to reference to get me to where I am at right now. I will try the method of installing new plugs and then running the bike in the stuttering range for a little while, then killing the ignition so I can...

    stuttering problem

The bike is a 1978 XS650SE. Had 8500 original miles prior to rebuild. Went through the entire engine last year while doing the build. Cylinders only required honing, no oversize. Crank & cam are OEM. All bearings & bushings measured well within limits. Besides replacing normal wear & tear parts...

    Gas Cap seal OEM number

The O-ring turned out to be a temp fix at best. Got the correct gasket for the cap. Life now is good!

    Gas Cap seal OEM number

So far so good with the O-ring installed. Filled up the bike, no sloshing out of the tank cap anymore. The metal gas cap doesn't rattle anymore. Just need to sort out a minor issue with the PMA charging system, and I'll be good to go. Thanks for all the help and info to all.

    Gas Cap seal OEM number

Went to Ace hardware. Plunked down a dollar bill and got the O-ring. Brought it home and installed it. Seems to have solved my problem. Will keep an eye on it to see if it lasts/works over a period of time. Thanks to everyone and their inputs.

    Gas Cap seal OEM number

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to try the Ace Hardware O-ring tomorrow. I'll try to makae sure it is made out of fuel resistant material. If that does not pan out, i will take dedchef's advice and order an honest to god seal from Yamaha.

    Gas Cap seal OEM number

I saw a post from someone else that did that. I wrote down the o-ring size he used from Ace hardware. I am going to pick one up and give it a try. Thanks.

    Gas Cap seal OEM number

The build on my son's 1978 XS650 SE is done. Everything is running great. One thing that needs to be taken care of is the gas cap seal. The one that was on the cap was dried out and cracked. Ordered the one from Mike's that says it fits all years, but it seemed to be different than the one we...

    safety relay yellow wire

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you that responded to my question about the safety relay yellow wire. We are going to splice it to one of the wires coming off of the new PMA alternator. I may or may not bypass the headlight. This bike has the lights on & off switch that should work if the...

    safety relay yellow wire

Thanks for the help I have received with this so far. I contacted Mike's XS about this since I bought the PMA from them. They say that I can hook up the yellow wire to any one of the three yellow wires that come out of the alternator by splicing it in. I am considering whether I want to do that...

    safety relay yellow wire

My son & I are finishing the wiring on his 1978 Yamaha XS650SE project bike. As part of the build up, we installed a new Boyer Brandson electronic ignition to do away with the old stuff, and a new PMA alternator kit to get rid of the old alternator. We got both kits from Mike's XS. I liked the...
