I think you're talking about the alternater cover. Gasket sets come with two alternater gaskets. They moved the dowel on the the bottom on later models. I put a newer cover on my '71, been a few years ago. There's a tab where the dowel is on older models, so I drilled a hole and put in the bolt...

The transmissions will swap out just fine. You'll also have to swap the gear on the kick start shaft! Found that out the hard way. I put a '77 transmission (and kick start gear) in my '71, but I used the '71 drum and forks.

I think individual adjustment at the carb end would be needed to sync the carbs. Anything will work if you "make" it work.

Stock '71. No electrics, nothing but throttle. Two cables, but I switched to the 2 into 1 when I switched to the VM34's. I had a picture but it won't let me upload it. Keeps saying I'm not logged in!:shrug: I'm not a computer person.

70 &71's had a lower first gear! I changed my whole transmission because it was kinda chewed up.

I believe Johnt3 is correct. It won't start without the battery.

If you're talking about the bike in the picture, that is a 256 engine. Three stud valve cover on the left exhaust.

I think you'll see the little red o-ring there on the right. I think that's #20.

If you had the cotter pins out of the shift forks, you might want to check and make sure they are not binding anywhere. Speaking from experience, they have to be in there just right and bent down flat against the forks.

Check the tech section, I think 30 ft-lbs will work better.
