    Fishing at it's best

Hey Blue, Before I went back for the metallurgy degree, I was Chief Chemist at ABEX AMSCO foundry in Denver. We made Hadfield's steel and high chrome white iron castings for RR frogs and ore crushers. My job was to grab a fresh hot sample ingot, make chips with a big drill press, dissolve...

How to index the auto advance unit

OK. Had better luck in the daylight. The hole for the pin was exactly straight down and out of view, and the lighting is poor in my garage at night. Everything's in place, no problem with the seal. As far as the instructions, you gotta realize that my engine had the Yamaha original electronic...

How to index the auto advance unit

Thanks, PamcoPete. I am at work, but i will check on the seal-covering-the-index-hole. The seal location looked ok, but i will eyeball it tonight at home. If the seal is too far out it could be difficult to move it in deeper. I dont know if it can be pushed in further.

How to index the auto advance unit

No, no hole or anything in the camshaft. I guess i'll have to improvise something. Mike's was out of the kit because they were out of Pamco units. They had no story and no indication of when or if they would get more. So i ordered the individual parts for the advance stuff from Mikes and then...

How to index the auto advance unit

WAIT. it does have a slot. But there's nothing on the cam to mate with the slot. No key or pin or anything. Cam has the right threads though. It's an '80 engine that had the original electronic ignition, so there was never an auto advance on the cam. Back to the drawing board.

great. I had an osprey smack down right next to me while fishing the Green at Flaming Gorge. It was awesome. He got the trout too. I felt like Marlin Perkins.

How to index the auto advance unit

The advance unit from Mike's doesnt have the slot. The only thing that makes sense is to set engine at TDC and line up the auto advance unit index mark somewhere stationary, like straight up or at a mating mark on the engine parts. Wish Mike's would talk to me. Cant believe they sent those parts...

How to index the auto advance unit

yeah, i figured that part. but when i tighten the advance unit onto the cam with the big slotted nut, doesnt it have to be aligned so that the Pamco rotor on the other side is in the right position for spark? the whole advance rod is floating free in the cam until the slotted nut it secured.

How to index the auto advance unit

My new auto advance unit has an index mark and a rotation direction arrow (Mikes advance and rod, bushings, etc, for Pamco ign unit). But what do i align the index mark with on the engine? Do i set the engine at top dead center, and what do i align the mark with? Couldnt get any instructions...

    Commando exhaust fit-up

Found out I had to grind out the mounting bracket hole a bit, and I just barely got it attached (the header pipe). Then the Commando muffler lined up the way it should. After-market stuff doesn't always fit-up like the original. On to my next problem...:)

    Master cylinder locked up

I can't get my front brake lever to move. Not used to hydraulic brakes on a bike. I guess i had them on my old Goldwing, but sold that long ago. Bought a used M-cylinder online, and i cant budge the hand lever. I've opened it up and looked inside, but dont see anything. Wouldnt have this problem...

    Commando exhaust fit-up

I took a vacation from my project bike a couple of years ago. Trying to get back in. I have brand new Commando exhaust system from Mike's, but the right side header seems out of kilter. When the mufflers are in place, the end of the right side muffler is about 2 or 3 inches lower than the left...
