    1978 XS650 won't stay running

Well managed to get her idling and running well. For anyone that this may help in the future, the issue was the float levels. For whatever reason, at some point I had set them at 27mm. At first when I reset to 24mm the carbs immediately began to overfill and flood our the carb bell, the reason...

    1978 XS650 won't stay running

Thank you for the very detailed reply 5 twins! I guess I should give the full story now to clear things up. Last year I rebuilt the engine, carbs, changed all the timing chain guides, and gave it a good tune up after the bike had sat since 1983 in my father in laws garage. I did about 200 km on...

    1978 XS650 won't stay running

I have brass floats, so I had set at 27mm. But I'm going to check again, last year when I rebuild the carbs, I had rigged a clear tube to verify level, but I'll have-to recheck.

    1978 XS650 won't stay running

alright so I cleaned the carbs once again, and now I can get it to idle, however it will pop at idle as if it wants to die. If i spray WD40 in the carb bell while it's running it will drop to a normal idle without popping. it's really strange. I'm beginning to wonder if my float heights are off...

    1978 XS650 won't stay running

thanks for the reply! the tank is actually in very good shape. The bike just sat in the back of my father in laws garage for 30 years without being run until last year. The tank was cleaned out very well, but there was still very fine rust that would break free from time to time and create...

    1978 XS650 won't stay running

Hi Everyone, I have a 1978 XS650 SE. Bike is stock and has been semi-restored. Motor is fresh, ignition system is fresh, valves adjusted and cam chain adjusted. I can't seem to get the bike to run off choke. It will run choked, and run if I give it a little bit of throttle without choke (while...

    Mikes-xs/aftermarket pistons/rings VS Yamaha NOS pistons/OEM rings

Thank you for the response! This is Really good to hear. As it will save me quite a bit of cash. I Assume you are using the rings from the kit as well?

    Mikes-xs/aftermarket pistons/rings VS Yamaha NOS pistons/OEM rings

Hi everyone, so I finally was able to get a hole of a bore gauge and micrometer to measure my cylinder/pistons. Cylinder is in spec and almost perfectly round. Pistons however, not so much. pistons are about 0.015" sloppy... So I'm going to replace the pistons and rings and get her back up...

    1978 XS650 Engine knocking noise

I had visually inspected everything when taking the motor apart, and all looked pretty good. no major scarring or burn areas. But I'll try and snap some photos never the less. Took a look at the cylinder walls today and they show some minor wear, so I think a light honing and some new rings are...

    1978 XS650 Engine knocking noise

Thank you for the reply 5twins. That's pretty much what I had deduced from my searching, was that they just about all looked like that. But wanted some second and third opinions to decided what to do. Got a nice list now of things I need to buy. Any things to avoid from Mikes XS? or are they...

    1978 XS650 Engine knocking noise

Anyone have experience with the mikesxs replacement quality? And can I simply remove the barrel that impedes removing the guide from the cam chain?

    1978 XS650 Engine knocking noise

So I tore into the engine today to take a look how everything was, and was pleasantly surprised. everything looks pretty clean inside, except for the front chain guide. It had some parts missing, and when I took it out the plastic delaminated from the metal. The rear is still solid, but...

1978 XS650 SE will not rev

The jet size from mikesXS is in fact 27.5. However, what I'm yet to verify, is the location of the restriction in it ; (VM22/210) vs other. I'm going to try it out with the mikes xs jets one more time and see what happens. then it's on to exploratory surgery to see how the cam guides are...

1978 XS650 SE will not rev

GOT IT! Thank you for the tips everyone. It turns out my problem was due to one of two things, #1 the pilot jets that I received from Mikes XS were slightly different than my original jets. They had many small holes around, and not one hole straight through, so I cleaned the old jets and put...

1978 XS650 SE will not rev

Oh yes, I understand that. I've been blowing 120psi air through them quite frequently haha. but at this point I'm thinking soaking definately will not hurt. Also, I just thought of something; If the three clustered holes were blocked, wouldn't it not idle at all when the choke is off?
