Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

A quick check. On a stock bike with #1 at TDC the mechanical advance drive pin hole in the cam should be a 6 o'clock. If it isn't your cam timing is out. I cant advice about points plate position.

If you are learning to lockwire here are some tips. If using standard XS rear sprocket bolts tighten them to torque. Work out which pairs of flats on the bolt head you need the holes in and mark . Doing 2 bolts at a time. Undo the bolts drill and replace taking note which bolt came from where...

Ninja EX500 carbs on an XS650?

Still quietly working on these carbs. No JJJ needles available here in NZ, I tried to order from Allens in the UK (during November 2023) they have them on backorder and when I asked of a ETA no reply. That was disappointing and I wont waste my time with them again. Jets R us have them and I was...

    Hughs complete cdi timing

Not for Hughs specifically but I set all inductive ignition pickups to 0.4mm. As an aside I have been told on early CDI ignitions the timing could be altered slightly by adjusting the size of the gap.

URGENT HELP to source electric ignition for rephased motor

Ok. That is the complete opposite of my experience. I run them in classic road race sidecars they get abused every start. I regard them as a install adjust and clutch slip gone. I have used them in my latest build (880cc) without hesitation.

URGENT HELP to source electric ignition for rephased motor

Good to here you bike is running. Two things to consider. Oil: I was told by a cam grinder to only use mineral oil on his built up and reground cams. Clutch: have you considered an eight plate clutch. The alto plates are thinner and on early clutches require no machining. I use them and they are...

    Project "McQueen1"

I have seen tidier rats nests than that wiring. Good job on sorting that to get the motor cranking. Xs's turned into scramblers look great, watching with interest.
