Very nice. That is my favorite color of all the XS's. Congrats on your purchase. Awesome looking bike to start with.
 
Looks like she needs some love but it appears all the parts are there at least eh?

As far as I can tell, only the enter stand is missing.

I was surprised to see Solex carburetors, I thought they had Mikunis then?

Very nice!! Mine was worse than that. Some 0000 steel wool , chrome cleaner and some elbo grease and it will shine up great. My paints beat , but it will be repainted someday. I love that color the most. Good buy . Enjoy !!

Man, those big drum front wheels are the bomb. I would love to get just one of those wheels.
 
Congrats on a very nice find. Re. the Solex markings, 1970-73 carbs were manufactured by Mikuni, under license from Solex. When the design was modified in 1974 (removing the raised floor in the venturi, among other changes), the Solex markings on the carb tops were deleted for Mikuni Kogyo markings. Like many Japanese manufacturers, Mikuni got its start with purchased designs while it developed the ability to create its own; the VM design, for example, was bought from Amal.
 
Thanks everyone, the bike is in my garage, but the seller wants me to make an offer first. 275$? She needs a top end job (spark plug holes are stripped) for sure, the tank is really rusty, and all the chrome and aluminium need to be changed/polished. I haven't looked at the brakes and engine internals yet, but I will not get there before I need to make an offer.

Grizld1, thanks for the info on the carbs, I noticed the small Mikuni lettering tonight while cleaning her up.

How do you strip the sprak plug holes? I wonder if you could get away with a helicoil?

That is what my neighbour suggested: remove the head, have the spark plugs hole enlarged, rethreaded, and install helicoils.

I can buy another xs650 motor (447) which has a decent head for 40$. Would the head fit and work with my older engine?

Gabriel, the gasket sealing surfaces on the 70-71 heads and cylinders are different from those on 72-83 motors. The port flanges on the later heads are also different from those on your heads, and would require using late carb boots, which might (guessing here) lead to issues aligning carbs to air box. You're rolling the dice with a used motor; if the bike were mine, I'd want to be sure of the top end from the start, and pulling the head to helicoil the plug threads would give you an opportunity to have a look at the condition of the cam chain guide and tensioner, valves, valve springs, cylinders and pistons, etc. The bike may have low miles on it, but condensation and resulting corrosion can take a toll on a motor in storage.

Hi,
It looks like a XS1B to me.
I own a few XS1F. The main differences are that the XS1F has
  • a different tail light (XS1F is rectangular same as XS1, whereas XS1B is rounded)
  • amber colored rear turn signals (whereas XS1B has red rear signals)
  • XS1F has front indicators are each side of headlight not on top of forks
