Making a spacer for FZR rotor

Hi all,

I'm in the middle of putting an FZR 600 (3HE) front end on my bike. I've already made spacers to mount the XS front wheel in the FZR forks and now need to make a spacer to offset the Ducati rotor that I'll be using. I need to make a spacer that's around 17mm thick to allow enough space for a four pot caliper to be used with the spoked wheel. I've seen a few examples of rotor spacers, some of which use recessed head bolts which mount the spacer to the caliper and then separate bolts which mount the rotor to the spacer. The simpler alternative is to have longer bolts that pass through the spacer and screw into the hub in the usual way. My question is, is there some advantage in the more complex aforementioned method? With a 17mm spacer will there be any problems with simply attaching the rotor by bolting through the whole assembly into the hub?

Just dummy thoughts; Newer than XS650 bikes use "large shank" rotor bolts, the shank extends into a bored hole in the hub so the bolt shank, not the threads, transfers the side (torque) loads to the hub. this is good practice especially with a spacer adding to the offset in the load path.

Any spacer "should" contain a shoulder to maintain rotor center instead of depending on the bolts to do it. This adds considerable machining work to making spacers.

This is what I did to mount a gsxr front end on a Harley with a 21" rim. I gave the measurements to a shop in Oregon and they made me one that worked beautifully and they were a real pleasure to deal with. A quick search I couldn't find the name but I could dig deeper if you're interested
