I don't know why I didn't think of this before.... I don't have a god way to make sure I get an even cut on my front fender - and maybe I want to go back to a full fender later so i'm hesitant about chopping the one i have ... so here we go!

Do you have an old less-than-perfect condition (but still solid) that will fit a 1979 Special? Do you have a cutoff saw or some other tool handy that can put a nice even cut in the fender? Chop your front fender & sell it to me! It will be painted. Chrome needs not to be perfect.

Pic (that I borrowed from this forum) attached of what I'm looking for. The pic has the fender chopped and then what looks like nicely rounded off as well. I'm OK with either this or a straight line cut in the directions that I have put the red lines. Basically level with the ground (roughly) in the back and a 45 degree angle in the front.

let me know if you are interested.

A chopped fender to go with a chopped Xs? Great plan! Thought about it myself, since I'm not crazy about the looks of some of the fork braces out there, and a chopped fender will do the same thing...

Just some thoughts cause I have thought about doing this, the fender has a roll edge and lip all the way around, chop it and you have a thin razor like edge that will be fragile. The ends will LOOK chopped off and rounding will make the effect worse. IF you are going to do this an 82 heritage special fender that is NOT chrome would make it easier to work on, weld or braze in an edge.... Do post up what you come up with?
I've been working on a black HS fender to fit my 18" front wheel conversion, First color coat yesterday. A bit of recurve, moved the mounting holes up 3/4" and reinforced welded the brace to the fender to stiffen it some more.

All good points. At this point I'm just trying to figure out the amount of fender I want on there and then I will work on the style once I figure that out. Great idea about welding in an edge though.

Too short?

Ha ya I figured. Really just was using as a fender brace but even tho I got it radius right and blended in the folds I still think it's ugly as hell. Good luck

Here's what I did to get a nice radius. Take an old Cable (clutch, throttle or speedo) and tape it to the edge of your fender. You can loop it around to the other side and adjust the radius more or less to get your desired length. The radius will be even, just mark it with a sharpie an cut it off with a 4" cutoff wheel.

You weren't kidding, that metal is super thin and truthfully hard to "shape". I took a crack at doing this for Pete, trying to work out the final details. If he doesn't want it then no worries. Just wanted a challenge. Here's how mine turned out, still needs a little sanding but didn't turn out to bad.

Thanks Gary! Always nice to try something new and have it not be a complete disaster, which I half expected it might be.
