Hello I just got home a xs650 for which I paid a dollar per cubic cenimeter, I am attaching some pictures, looks pretty good, got good compression, tires so so, definetely been dropped hard on the right side as the tank is dented and the brake lever is bent, but I could care less about cosmetics .Runs well other than cold as hell and has a weird surging in acceleration before she's warmed up, also some gnarly backfiring. I plan on buying a carb rebuild kit since she said it had been sitting for months and I'm sure it wouldnt hurt. Planning on getting a nice bench seat from DCC and a Wasp fairing for that faux cafe look. Other than that I'm keeping her stock. Any thoughts or feedback? Ideas? Let me have it! Thanks guys/gals!
- Daniel

That looks pretty good Wayne! I would take an inventory of what is missing (tach for one) and post a list on the Forum.

You might be surprised at easily, quickly and cheaply you will complete that old gal with donations/sales from guys who are watching.

Looks like you’ve got yourself a ball game!

Congrats on the new to u toy. You may consider putting off the carb kit purchase until after a good cleaning.

Agreed - and most people feel that buying just the OEM parts you need separately is likely more cost effective than buying a generic kit that might have a whole bunch of parts that you don’t need.

You can often buy OEM parts from your local Yamaha dealer - or from a number of online merchants such as boats.net.

A key thing is to go in with the actual Yamaha part number - and you can get that info from the parts exploded views that online at boats.net.

Welcome to the club. That tank ding looks more like a storage souvenir.
Get it up and running and use it a bit before you spend bucks on cosmetics.

That is a candidate for "Road Warrior" class. I mean that in the best way. What size is that Shovel in the back? I sure miss mine....

Haha I always take that as a compliment. She's an 80ci love that bike, got to get her wired up by next summer for sure. What did you have and why no longer?

I had a then new '84 Low Rider 80 ci and later a '79 Super Glide I think 74 ci. Both Stolen.

Oh I almost forgot to mention, in a box of parts she gave me was none other than a brand new Hughs Handbuilt PMA, I was blown away by that..

Hi Wayne,
there's no effin' way anyone in his right mind would want to swap out an XS650's working stock electrical system to put a PMA in it's place.
OTOH, a brand new Hugh's Handbuilt PMA does have considerable monetary value and some XS650 owners ain't very sensible.
Mebbe one of them has a stock tank he's removed from his ongoing XS650 hardtail project in favor of a peanut-sized chopper tank,
has swigged down the "go batteryless" koolade and will swap his tank for your PMA?
