It takes very little skill to make a blanking plate. Cut a 2-1/4" piece of 1x1/4" aluminum bar stock, scribe a line down the center, center punch two dimples 46 mm. apart on the line, and drill. Cut a gasket to match, cover both sides with Hylomar or similar following curing directions to the letter, and done. The nonvacuum replacement petcock from Mike's XS is much less bulky than the OE vacuum petcock, and it helps to raise the back of the tank a bit. There are cheap, compact thread-in petcocks with 1/4" NPT nipple available from a number of sources, basically Chiwanese repops of early Harley petcocks, that provide more clearance. I've had several of those including the one currently on my bike, and I've never had a bad one. Fabricating a mounting plate takes a drill press, a 1/4" NPT tap, and a little more skill, but it's a fairly simple job; use 3/16" or 1/4" steel bar stock. The hole in the tank has to be opened a bit with a round file to clear the petcock nipple.
