Good morning everyone. I have a 1982 xs650 Heritage Special whose alternator, rotor etc.. has crapped out. I'm considering a Hughs Hand Built Pamco and want to know if anyone else has installed one on their bike. I was going to replace rotor, stator etc.. but finding new parts is sketchy. Found rotor for 81, stator for 82, other electrical etc.. all of this is going to be about the same price as a Hughs. I'm seriously looking at a Pamco system. Broke down once, don't want to do it again, hopefully. So, can anyone give a solid recommendation for a Hughs Pamco system, need advice. Thank you Hal

Pamco ignition is out of business and I don't think Hugh has any thing to do with them. Hugh does however sell an ignition and charging system which is what I think you are talking about. I don't have any direct knowledge of that product. Good luck with your project.....

The alternator is a charging system.... a Pamco is an ignition system.... two completely different functions. On your 82 however, the ignition system (TCI) is attached to the alternator. Replacing the stock alternator with a PMA will also require replacement of the ignition... costing a fair bit more than just a PMA.
Before you do that you might want to consider rebuilding your existing system. Have a look here.

I've got 57,000 miles on my XS650SK. I have replaced the alternator rotor, the pickup coil, and recently had my TCI box repaired. No other issues, ever. I consider the factory supplied system to be the most trouble free. I don't think you'll do that well on Chinese parts. (I am not suggesting Hugh is selling Chinese parts, because I really don't know if he is or isn't)

Thank you for your reply. I'm new at this, I get my terms mixed up. Hughs is supposed to have ignition as well in kit. if I order one I'm going to call first and make sure what I'm getting. Hoping someone on the forum has tried one.

I don't know if their china or not, glad you mentioned that. If I talk with them I will ask. I would feel more comfortable with stock parts but am having trouble locating stator, rotor to begin with. Where did you get your rotor from, do they have stators as well.

Thank you for your input

If your referring to the HHB CDI it seems to be a good unit and easy to install. VAPE is fool proof and easier to install.
