It won't embed for whatever reason, but I suck at the computer game.... 277 Degree Rephase, stock bore, stock head, Mikuni VM 34MM Roundslide Carbs, Stock Headpipes, Pamcopete Ignition. This is a Kick Only engine, we deleted the starter and all the related shafts and gears.

Still needs to be broken in, fully tuned, camchain re-tensioned, head re-torqued and such, but this is a great running engine. The ticking you head is the valves, I run them very loose while breaking in an engine, at .006-.007" so that I can guarantee everything is getting oiled properly before final tuning and install.

Notice that this thing is SUPER loose on my test stand (only 1 bolt holding it tight), but idles smoother than any stock XS650 engine you will find. I built this for an XS650.com member.

And yes, I know I need a better camera.... Thanks for watching, and check out Hugh's HandBuilt for other Rad XS650 stuff....

This just made my day Hugh. Any more upload to Youtube with rephased motors would be great too. Can I also put in a request of a video of you riding your black and white marvel of engineering?

I'll see if my buddy will hold the camera while I ride up and down the street... That poor bike is soo beat down

I wish I could rebuild something half that cool...maybe I will try my own rephase someday....just have to build up my track record of being able to put everything back together after I pull it apart!

what is your total cost on a rephase

Parts aren't too bad, but if you want me to build an entire engine, you'll wanna be sitting down for this

J/K - It all depends on the condition of the engine and its internals before I even get started. Rephased parts are $485 (crank and cam) and the rebuild is anywhere from $700.00 and up for gaskets, seals, soda and bead blasting, honing, etc...

For a TCI you would need two complete systems. The second pick up mounted 277 degrees from the first. It might be tough. I think the brushes might get in the way.

If I tried to idle my 277 rephase that low with VM34s it would pop through the RH carby and die, so I need my idle set to over 1400rpm, but would really prefer it to idle at 1100 or less. The lower idle sounds very mean on these re-phased engines.

How hard is it to put richer pilots into these carbs? My engine has mikes 750 kit but I bet the carbs think they are on a 650 and are running too lean at idle... The carb kit was ordered by 650central... all work done by PO.

I.

I can't say much about your VM34's. I have BS38's on my 750 kitted 75. The carbs areset the same as they were on the 650 engine.
I thought I would need to tweek the carbs with the 750. I tried several things, jets both mains and pilots, needle clip slots, airscrew adjustments. And ended up back at the same a the 650. To get a better idle I might try syncing the carbs better. At a low idle and the right side quits I would say that side the carb on that side is set to low. You need to set that side a bit faster.
Either use a $5 home made manometer or use the dead cylinder method of carb sync.
Setting the idle low may sound good but it can prevent proper battery charging and low speed operation.

Thanks for the video Hugh. You are a real inspiration to this model of Yamaha and have become one of the best backyard builder resources for the XS650. Keep Rephasing those motors.

IF you are using a Permanent Magnet Alternator and a good set of tuned carbs, you can idle as low as 500 RPM and still be very rideable. Mine idles about 750-800
