    Cleaning off the mothballs...

Got a NM title and registration. Even took the wife for a ride this afternoon. The bike ran great, except for being difficult to downshift. Still lots of work to do, but its rideable and that's very nice.

Helmholtz resonators and how this applies to your motorcycle?

So I've been turning this resonant thing around in my head for the past couple of days. For all people complain about the airbox, mine is still on and the power delivery (when the bike runs) is nice and smooth. Is the airbox for the later models a resonant airbox? If so, has anyone figured out...

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

Cleaned the slip rings today and that brought the charging voltage to 13.8! I also got the top end off one of my parts engines. Besides being really dirty it looks like its in good shape.

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

What I really need are the engine parts anyway, and these engines look pretty untouched. One is seized, but the nuts all have sharp corners, like they've never been loosened, so I have hope that the internals are in good shape. The one odometer says 22k miles. Between the two bikes there might...

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

Thanks 5twins, I'll be sure to check on that. In other news, I brought home a couple of craigslist parts bikes yesterday. I really only needed one, but he wanted to get rid of both of them. I'll be taking a couple of parts from one engine and the triple tree. Neither frame has a title; one of...

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

Got up early and put it back together, then hooked up to my car battery and started her up and ran for about 15 minutes. Charging voltage was 13.2 at 3k rpm. Video here. Next steps: Tear it back down to fix my oil leak. Make a list of parts I need to replace. Rebuild it. Ride.

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

Got a light hung up (after installing two new receptacles, replacing the one that was wired backward and not rated for aluminum wire), checked the carbs (pretty darn clean actually), installed the brushes, and got the carbs back on. I need to finish re-assembly check the plugs, and hopefully...

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

I'll put up pics when I have a chance to work with decent light. I'm going to get up early and replace the junction box in the ceiling and install an outlet so I can hang a real shop light., which should help a lot. Also, sometimes I am really impressed with my past self. I was getting ready to...

    Cleaning off the mothballs...

Hey All, Long time, no ride. Almost exactly three years ago I limped home on my XS650. I had only a 6 mile commute, and it died several times on my way home, any time I let the rpms drop. Every time I thought it might not start back up, but the old girl did not leave me stranded and I made it...

    Is this air leakage normal?

    Good to know guys, thanks!

    Is this air leakage normal?

I have been working on this top end rebuild for months (making time for it has been hard), but I'm nearly there. Before I rivet the cam chain together, I want to know if this is a normal amount of air leakage (you can hear the hissing of air as I turn the crank): I am turning the crank with a...

    Is the manual accurate?

Thanks for all for your replies - I know I posted this a while ago. I finally got out to the garage and re-measured for sanity's sake. Inner lengths are 40.9, 41.0, 41.2, and 40.9. Outer lengths are 42.0, 42.2, 41.9, and 41.9. All well above the 1.565" (39.75 mm) and 1.595" (40.51 mm) limits...

    Is the manual accurate?

I'm in the middle of a top-end rebuild. Measuring my valve-spring free length, they are a little short. They meet the pre-77 spec, but my bike is an '81 Special. Is the manual correct; am I due for new springs? Clymer manual lists pre '77 lengths as 1.638 for the outer and 1.614 for the inner...

What have you done to your XS today?

I started prepping for my top-end rebuild. Removed the airbox, carbs, battery, exhaust, footpegs, etc, and drained the oil. Edit: And today I actually got the engine out! I'm now about to enter new (for me) territory: opening an engine that has to go back together again.

    Opening engine, what to do?

Are valve guide seals the same as these valve stem seals?

    Opening engine, what to do?

What is the difference between the standard overhaul gasket set and the premium gasket set? Seems like the standard set should be just fine, right? Any recommendations on which cam chain from Mikes is best? Edit: I just checked, and it turns out only one of the chains fits my year.
