    spoke vs mag

Spokes look good until you pick up a nail doing 70mph. That's when things get very nasty. I returned from a 5500 mile trip on my bike with alloys and found 2 nails in the rear when I got home and no loss of air.

    Parts Swaping

YES, YES AND YES. I've had eight 650s from 1972 to 1983 and I can swap all parts on the years that you've mentioned.

    Front end lock install?

I'd like to see a picture of your ride. You've got my curiosity up now.

    Front end lock install?

This is what I know about the right locking mechanism. There's a hole cut in the triple tree shaft that the the lock pin goes into to lock the steering. If it locked to the left, the left fork leg would be in the way of the lock. If you think that you COULD access the lock with it turned to the...

    Front end lock install?

The image is too small to make out any details. Could you do a larger attachment? Hey, I appreciate the info on the lock. That would be a pretty easy lock to dismantle by simply bending the cover plate out and off, slide the lock out, and your beloved 650 is history. I'll keep using the ol' pad...

    Front end lock install?

Has anyone swapped out the steering head lock? Mine '74 lock has been removed and I want to install a new one. But, do you simply slip it in place and use a friction pin to keep in it? It looks simple enough, but before I drive the pin into the lock boss, I'd like to make sure that's all there...

    Exchanging carbs on motors

I swap those around now and then with no change. The points and cam timing should be the same regardless of which carbs you use.

    just not running right HELP!!!!

Probably not your problem, but I'd make sure it's not sucking air around the intake boots. I wonder if they changed the needle setting? Also, hardtails are also hard on carb floats. Bouncing around might let too much fuel into the bowls. Check you plugs to see if it's running too rich. Just a...

Replaced Push Rod Seal.. Not Bushing

I had to replace the rod on mine because there was a slight grove cut in it from the old, dirty seal. A new seal would still leak oil. Be sure and use the correct drill bit to remove the bushing. I've replaced several bushings and have always been able to remove the old one without damaging the...

    Half-way between gears

It almost sounds like a bent shifting fork or worn gears. Just a guess. I can't imagine the missing ball bearing causing that. The ball is very important though because it prevents a possible meltdown to the clutch engaging rod.

Review of some parts purchases from MikesXS

I just finished putting one of Mike's front cam chain sliders in and I'm afraid to ask what the quality, or lack of, is on those. The rubber seemed mighty soft. Most of the stuff I get is okay except for Chinese rubber pieces. Chinese rubber is not worth messing with. His piston wrist...

    How screwed am I?

I've retained the electric starter on my three 650s simply because while riding in heavy city traffic I sometimes slip up and let it die leaving an intersection. Touch the button and never slow down. It's happened only a couple of times but a busy intersection is not a good place to be kicking...

How to get out stripped BS38 Pilot Jets?

You could try drilling it out and use an EZ-OUT, but don't be surprised if they STILL won't come out without breaking the tool. You might be better off just cleaning out the hole and leaving it alone. I've been there before. You can always find another float bowl on this forum or eBay if you...

    447 Type Rings - Hastings?

I have measured Acura rings and found that the diameter & thickness is correct but the width of the rings (inside to outside) is less which gives them a little less cylinder wall contact pressure. They WILL work but would not seal as well over the long haul.

Too many carbs and too little know-how!!

That's 10-4, thanks! That Mr. Griz is the MAN!! Shoot, I'm lovin' these ol' 650s more and more. I've had 8, still have 4, wish I had another! Can't get enough of these things. I've got to redo my '78 ring job because it used 1-1/2 qts of oil in 400 miles. I'm pretty sure I forgot to stagger the...

Too many carbs and too little know-how!!

I have a box full of Mikuni 38mm carb parts and don't know how to match up parts for a complete carb set. I can get everything right except for the float bowls. For instance, the "E" and "H" bowls have different ways to flow fuel through the pilot jets. How can you know which bowl works with...

Mike's XS Cam Chain and Guide?????????

I've used a lot of Mike's XS stuff in the past and have always been pleased. However, when it comes to critical internal engine parts, I'd like to get your opinion on something. I need a new cam chain and front chain guide. I'm sure the chain is okay, but what about the guide. Has anyone out...

    Floats that collaspe???

There's a possibility that I might have used an air hose (with the bowls on) the last time I cleaned them. I never thought of that. I have several floats from other 650 carbs that's the same way (those were not mine when it happened to them). They're all, including mine, just slightly collapsed...

    Floats that collaspe???

The floats on my right 38 carb collapsed as though they were vacuum packed. What causes that? Backpressure from a leaking intake valve??

funny noise from top of motor?

My tensioner has a loud tick also. But the tensioner has to be angled UP when installed. Turning it upside down would put the plunger below its mating surface. How is yours after turning it upside down? I know a damper belongs under the spring but it must get eaten up and swallowed by the...
