    Kickstart problems

Thanks for your reply. I only noticed that the issue had not gone away when I put the casing back on at the end of the day. So the items you raised are worth checking. it is worth noting that the casing was on since a professional rebuild and fine until recently. and yes, the shim was...

    Kickstart problems

My kickstart has developed a strange issue. Every so often the kickstart lever will only return to a 9 o’clock position. A little nudge lets it spring back all the way. The problem started after a kickback (yes, I am aware that could be a timing issue, but I was getting the engine to run to...

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

    I have a shower? Lol

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

True...with the cafe it just didn’t cross my mind as it was working fine before. I just can’t shake the feeling it is too much of a coincidence that on both bikes the left cylinder has developed an issue...but maybe I’m just getting paranoid...lol

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

As I had to remove the exhaust for repair (of the chopper), I have not been able to try that yet. As for trying it on th3 cafe, I haven’t as it worked up until yesterday morning with the plugs I had and seemed to have plenty of spark when I checked. Again, my mistake for mixing threads.

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

Yes, I saw the thread you attached. I checked in case I’d forgotten, but it appears I do not have a single post in that thread, so again I have no idea what you are on about.

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

Possibly. It is my mistake for mixing two different bikes with a very similar issue, but different causes likely (as pointed out by Peanut). I will split this thread to avoid further confusion.

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

With all respect, are you in the right thread? This thread only has 47 posts, 48 including this one. And even so, I’ve been away on holiday, so may have missed them between you posting and removing them. As for your advice, respectfully, I disagree with your observation my troubleshooting is...

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

I’m sorry if I somehow offended you, I can assure you this was completely unintended. As for ignoring or not responding to your posts I can see that myself. I’ve looked back and have responded to virtually every post you made and took your advice on board and did some of the things you...

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

Gentlemen, do I have a doozy for you today. Today I was planning on doing a compression test and checking the valves on the XS Chopper to see if there was a clue as to why the left cylinder is not firing. Before that there were a few small thing I wanted to tie up on the XS Cafe Racer. When I...

Cheers, I've seen them before. Not a bad idea, but I have these baflles laying about unused from another project. They bolt in much like the lollipops, so can always change if I want at some point...;)

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

Swapping out the carbs yielded the same result indeed. However because it does not fire it tends to get very wet. It certainly does not feel any weaker when kicking it over, but as above: a compression test is on the cards asap. Hopefully it's not that (ball ache) but possibly valve...

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

Ahem...A 2011 Harley Iron, heavily customised (its been on 2 DGR's), a 1978 XS650 cafe Racer Bratt (been on 1 DGR), a 1985 ex Dutch army Moto Guzzi V50 NATO in full military getup (been on 1 DGR), a 1978 BMW R80 in bits (yet to ride again) and of course this one.... I've been involved with the...

    Exhaust opinion

Couple of things to tick off here, lol: - Thanks for the compliment! If I were to go for smaller pipes, the design would not change, just thinner pipes. - When it ran, it was indeed VERY loud...louder than my Harley even. And yes, it is quite stretched, which was a bit unexpected and takes...

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

haha..well, actually I wanted to ride this last year. Didn't quite make it. I am taking part again, but really hope it will be done way before then. Besides, I have options...lol

Are you concerned about heat expansion in the float bowl? It won't even fire from cold, so not sure that's a factor.

Left cylinder not firing on 2 XS’s

well, I'm obviously not as experienced as I've never done a compression test and in the research I've done it says that for the compression test you'll need to run the engine first. Although I was not quite clear why, I assumed the engine needs to be at temperature so you measure compression at...

    Exhaust opinion

As some of you may have seen in my other thread, some engine issues have led me to re-think the exhaust design on the bike below. Although it has run and has been ridden it was never completely happy and then started to not fire on the left cylinder (see other thread). Anyway, in the process of...
