Headlight, neutral indicator, and brake indicator not working

So I hooked the headlamp up to the battery and it works just fine. I have voltage across the hookups for the lamp but when I hook the lamp up the voltage drops to zero. I'm at a loss... My guess would be the light has a short but it works when connected to the battery. Posted via Mobile

    Idle hover

So I bought a timing light and set the timing (points gaps were way off). This seemed to fix the problem and the bike is running great. Next issue is that when in neutral if I rev it up to a high rpm, say 5000 or so, I get white smoke coming out of the left exhaust. Any ideas what could be...

Headlight, neutral indicator, and brake indicator not working

I am very new to the electrical components of my xs and I am not sure what could have caused this. My headlight stopped working yesterday on my 77 xs650. Then today the neutral indicator and brake light indicator stopped working. I doubt that all of the lights have burned out so I assume it has...

    Idle hover

I did this and I saw the weights expand but when the idle hovers they stay out. How do I know if them staying out is the cause of the hover or if the hover is happening for another reason and the weights stay out because the RPMs are still high? Posted via Mobile

    Idle hover

Just out of curiosity and so I can understand what is going on a little more, if it is the advance sticking or an over advance why would releasing the clutch cause the idle to drop?

    Idle hover

Is there a difference between over advance and stuck advance? And is it possible to check for with a multimeter? I don't have a timing light. I planned on checking timing with a multimeter but obviously you can't do that with the engine running. Posted via Mobile

    Idle hover

I was experiencing an idle hover and carb popping when starting on my 77 xs. I checked the advance weights and they were not returning a they should so I cut a loop of of each spring and greased the rod. They seem to be returning when I push them out. It is starting and running well but I...

    Where to buy jets?

I am probably going to need to re-jet my carbs (stock bs38) as I have installed pod air filters. I was wondering where the best place to buy jets was? I hate paying the shipping at mikes but I know that they have them. Thanks!

How many miles do you have on your xs?

There we go! I know what that's like here in central OH. I don't think it's ever going to warm up. What year is yours? Are all the miles yours? Any major problems? Most of all, any tips?

How much movement should you see? Sorry to revive an old thread. Just cam across this while doing some research.

How many miles do you have on your xs?

As for the 1,000 in one day. It is the first leg of the iron butt challenge. It's just something we have been wanting to do. So I am not necessarily looking forward to it, or expecting it to be extremely enjoyable. Just doing it to do it. Just wondering if anyone has done anything similar on an...

Carbs popping off when starting, not running well

Thanks. Yeah its been an ongoing project. This will be my third summer riding it. I've done a good deal of carb work on it so far. Which may be why it's flooding. Lol. Posted via Mobile

Carbs popping off when starting, not running well

Leo, Thanks. I have read the carb manual. I plan on doing some carb work over easter weekend. But I was worried about the smoke because wouldn't that mean that there is either bad compression (I need to get a tester, but don't have one), an open valve, or bad timing. I really hope it is just the...

How many miles do you have on your xs?

I mentioned in another thread that my 1977 xs650 just hit 120,000 miles. It seemed to get a reaction of surprise. But I am sure there are others out there with just as many and probably more miles on their bikes. So how many miles do you have on yours? Side question, what's the most miles you...

Carbs popping off when starting, not running well

Ok, so finally got to work on it today. First I adjusted the cam chain, then the valves. Then I got to the ATU. I could push the weights out and they would not come back in on their own. So I removed the advance rod and cleaned and lubed it with CV joint grease. They still did not come back so I...

Carbs popping off when starting, not running well

Thanks everyone. I won't even be able to look at it until Saturday. It sounds like the advance unit is the problem, and makes a lot of sense with my symptoms. Once it starts it runs fine at higher rpms, but dies at lower. I really hope I don't have to replace the whole unit; I am on a tight...

Carbs popping off when starting, not running well

Thanks gggGary!. No experience with the advance or advance springs. If it were a sticking advance, is there a way to grease or lube it? Yeah, it's a lot of miles, my dad bought it brand new in 1976.

Carbs popping off when starting, not running well

To start off, I have a 1977 xs650 that just hit 120,000 miles. I was riding the other day and I went to kickstart it (electric start is so-so) and the carbs popped out of the boots/holders (I have pod filters). This happened twice more before I finally got it started and got it home. Now it does...
