Hey all, I've got a 79' and a 75' that are both burning too much oil. The 79' is so bad, it goes through 1/2 quart after 80 miles of riding! :yikes: Both engines have about 11000 to 13000 miles on them. The bottom ends are good, but they are both smoking out the exhaust and leaving oil on...

The big mystery has been solved! I had a loose power wire in the fuse box junction. Fixed the connection, tested the voltage off the PMA, 13.7 volts! I went on a 125 mile ride, came back home with the battery at 12.6 volts! I feel much better now knowing the charging system gremlin was...

I did a compression check ... cold, left = 90, right = 120. Hot, left = 120, right = 120. looks like a top end rebuild will be coming this winter.

Thanks, I'm at the age now where just getting things thrown together is not just good enough. I really want this bike to be bullet-proof and enjoyable! Even though I'm not done with the bike completely, I already want another one! :laugh:

Yay, Dime City Cycles ... they have a few to choose from. It was a bit pricey $230, but I've put about 200 miles on it, 80 in one day and it was very comfortable. This is the one I bought ...

Another XS back from the dead. I bought this 79' almost 4 months ago, it hasn"t ran since 09' and it's now finally road worthy! Before and after pics ... I restored a stock tank (was dented bad, so I gave hammering the knee dents a shot myself. Now I just need to paint it!) new parts ... PMA...

I have not rechecked the head bolts, but I have upgraded the ignition to a new single coil PAMCO. I'll be looking into retorquing the head.

Is there a way to check voltage coming from the PMA, before the reg/rec? Just to make sure that it is working properly? BTW, this is what I found after the ride ... wires literally just fell out of the connector! Also, who produces the PMA kits that Mike's XS sells?

I thought it might be the muffler bearings, I should check them!

Do you think the oil condition is being caused by timing set up, valve seat, valve guide seal, or even worse, piston ring tolerance? The bike hasn't ran since 09' according to previous owner ...

After reading this post this explained why my dual filament 23w/8w bulbs didn't flash. I went to Advance Auto and bought the two prong #552 relay, and it worked like a charm. Thanks for all of the R/D!

Thanks again for the imput, I turned the post around and the sidestand works like a charm. Now I'll be able to ride without worry of the sidestand dropping down! :bike:
