What have you done to your XS today?

Nice looking ride, Gene. Electrics tucked under the seat? Do you miss the top engine mounts at all?

    Hahaha! Sounds familiar.

    Brake lights staying on:

Thanks for clarifying, Leo. Wiring isn't my strong suit, and it appeared both physically (following the wiring on my bike) and by looking at the diagram that the switches were wired in series. That was why I referred the gentleman to the rear brake switch, as it was closest to the light, before...

    Some cafe questions

Nice one, Tony! You use an actual tank for the mold?

    Brake lights staying on:

Forgive me if the jargon wasn't accurate, but the information I was trying to relay was clear enough. If you really want to be technical, it's a momentary switch.

    Brake lights staying on:

There is no "front brake switch", just a brake switch, and it is located by the right foot peg. Both the front and rear brake run thru it, so they individually activate the brake light. Check the housing that the kill switch is in. The wiring goes from that housing to the headlight, back to...

    Brake lights staying on:

Yeah. What fredintoon said. If the wiring was bad, there wouldn't be any brake light. Check the switch again. You said yesterday that it worked after you cleaned it, and that it had been sticking. Maybe there is some kind of short in the housing itself between the switch components.

    Brake lights staying on:

Yeah, it is right behind the frame, where it angles down to the foot pedal. There are two black wires that come out of it. I'd check there, as both the front brake and the rear use that switch to complete the circuit that turns on the brake light. The rear brake utilizes a wire/cable that gets...

    Some cafe questions

I think the glass part is easy enough. Painting has quite the curve. There is lots of info available. Just got to search it out. If you have your stock seat still, buy some vinyl and spray glue. It is pretty easy to reshape foam with a common serrated kitchen knife. I shaped one with a knife and...

    Some cafe questions

Check out dime city cycles website. They posted some cool videos in their blog, one showing how to make a cafe seat. Make your own. You don't want one off the shelf. It needs to fit the flow and form of your bike. The slope of the tank should be echoed by the tail, like the seat was scooped out...

Awesome! Glad to hear it. Yeah, check the moving parts first. Usual suspects.

    Brake lights staying on:

Yes, there is a smaller set of insulated wires that run out of that housing, in addition to a larger bundle and the actual brake cable. The smaller bundle is for the front brake and it runs to the brake switch near your right foot peg. Open the housing up and spray all the contacts with a good...

    Brake lights staying on:

No prob. The front brake also has a contact in the right hand switch housing. I would unscrew the housing and spray it with an electric contact cleaner, work the switches back and forth. A lot of corrosion, dirt, and grime builds up over 30 plus years.

    Brake lights staying on:

I'd start with the switch by your right foot/rear break. It's mechanical with moving components, maybe something is preventing it from opening.

    76 brat build

Check for a wiring diagram for your year. Should be able to sort it out from there. Maybe try an image search for components in question. I would identify the bare essentials and scrap the rest. There is a lot of unnecessary stuff going on in the electronics department on these bikes. Sorry...
