OK to temporarily remove front engine mount?

Thanks for the info on the lock nuts. I've already torqued them down so it doesn't make sense to loosen them again. If they loosen on their own I'll add lock washers.

OK to temporarily remove front engine mount?

Thanks all. Turns out the left exhaust blocks the lower frame bolt from coming out and I didn't want to mess with the exhaust just yet, so I just pivoted the engine mount around that bolt and did a touch up job while still on the bike.

OK to temporarily remove front engine mount?

As part of my resurrection of an '81 Special, I'd like to take the front engine mount off and touch up the paint on the mount itself. The surrounding frame is fine. This is probably just me being paranoid, but ... will I need to jack up or support the engine at all or will the other mounts hold...

    Wanted - rear spokes for '81 XS650H

The rear 16" wheel on my '81 XS650H has a few loose spokes and one broken spoke. Before doing a complete re-build, I want to try replacing the broken spoke and tightening all the loose ones. Rather than buying a full set just yet, does anyone have a few extra spokes they care to part with? This...

    Wanted - Swingarm shaft/bolt for '81 XS 650 Special

my zip is 02052. PayPal is fine, it will show up under my wife's name. Re: overall quality, would you put it back on your bike if you had need? I'm not building up a show bike, so it doesn't have to be like new, just reliable(i.e. decent threads, no heavy rust, not bent, etc.).

    Wanted - Swingarm shaft/bolt for '81 XS 650 Special

Do you have the nut that goes with it? And are the threads in good shape for both? If so, sounds like a reasonable deal. Let me know your payment options. I assume shipping is somewhere under $10.

    Wanted - Swingarm shaft/bolt for '81 XS 650 Special

yep, while removing the swingarm shaft I buggered the threads. I've ground down the end and will try to re-cut the threads, but the shaft is likely too short now. Does anyone have a spare shaft & bolt lying around in good condition that they'd like to sell for something less than buying new...

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

Update #2 - The garage gods smiled on me today. Right engine/clutch cover came off without tearing the gasket. Everything was nice and shiny inside, the various gear teeth looked good there were no plastic shards, the right side of the crankshaft spun cleanly (no discernible wobble, i had...

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

@xjwmx Thanks for the link, i'll give that a try as well. One more question regarding the possible splitting of the crank shaft. As mentioned before, I haven't yet pulled off the clutch cover but before I do (and drain the oil yet again), is it *likely* that the RH end of the crankshaft is OK...

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

Update#1 The old oil from the first oil change after purchase had some glittering metal flakes but not as bad as the pics from 5twins. I have no idea how long it had been since the last oil change, so could have been regular engine wear. No big plastic chunks. Screwdriver stethoscope test did...

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

Good point xjwmx. Conveniently, we're traveling this weekend, so I didn't rush out to the garage and pull the engine before the thread evolved. Sounds like the order should be: 1. Diagnose using screwdriver 2. If 1 doesn't ID the issue, take off the side covers and check for smooth crank...

Ahhh, now I understand. Thanks for the add'l info.

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

Good points all, thanks for your input. Now my wife will get to laugh at me as a stick a screwdriver handle in my ear. For @xjwmx, I'm confused how a crankshaft would split at the end. Any chance you have a pic to show it better? The left side seemed fine when I was manually cranking it during...

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

thanks. I'm not getting any ticking, just a steady "dryish" sound that seems to be the timing chain. The top end is getting oil, so the pump seems to be working correctly. i don't recall seeing any ground aluminum in the last oil change, but i wasn't looking for it either. I haven't disposed...

Can you diagnose cam chain guide without disassembly?

Bike reference - 1981 XS650 H, 19081 miles, purchased in the last month with unknown maintenance history. With normal "new to me" maintenance, the bike now starts and idles fine, carbs thoroughly cleaned, valve clearances adjusted, etc. Cam chain tensioner is flush with +/- 1 mm travel when hand...

    Run without clutch switch?

Thanks all for the input. As mentioned, I'm not great with wiring, so I'll just leave it alone and tuck the unattached section of the wire harness away (and start in neutral all the time) or rig some way to hold it in place.

    Run without clutch switch?

Jumping on an old thread because it's relevant for my project. Hopefully someone is listening. When Retiredgentlemen said "you can simply connect the two wires" does that mean connect them to each other to complete the circuit or connect them permanently to the switch? At the moment, the...

    1980 XS650 H/Special II - can't get both oil drain bolts out

thx. unfortunately I already put them on to the spec'd torque and filled the oil, without looking for the seam. Guess i have a 50/50 chance on both. They did partially flatten at the 30 ft-lb torque spec, but not completely.
