thank you guys. I knew there must be a way other than how the book says it. Well bad news and a minor setback. The right side petcock flows as it should with no leaks. The left side? Not too good. It leaks like a sieve. I'll pull it off and apart and see if there is anything obvious. I kinda...

I just thought of this. Are there any good videos on adjusting the cam chain tensioner or maybe a simple explanation of the process? Most of these old Metric bikes have the "Book way" and then the right way. Like my 71 CB350 if you try to adjust it by the book you're kidding yourself.

I am not sure of the brand but yes it is a pleated oval shaped pod. I personally am not a fan of pods on CV carbs and believe the OEM air box is the way to go. I don't have the OEM filters so I'm stuck with these. Seems to start easily and is very throttle responsive. Much better than I expected...

Yes 1977. The speedo shows about 4800 miles and it was stored in a garage since 1987.

That is a Harbor Freight lift I got on sale a few years ago. After about 20 years of working on bikes I finally got one!

Thank you! Counter shaft nut is tight, and I mean tight. Could be just corroded. As for pics I have to have my 5 posts in before I can post pics. It has been repainted to gloss black so unknown original color. The exhaust is a 2 into 1 on the right side and it sounds mean! I was told the bike...

Looking for tools? My personal preference for JIS style screwdrivers believe it or not are Harbor Freight. The have never failed me and fit these old screw heads perfectly. They look like Phillips head but they are NOT. https://www.harborfreight.com/screwdriver-set-32-pc-61259.html Also an...

Thank you for the note. First ever? May I offer some suggestions that would be useful regardless of the make model old Metric bike. First the carbs are dirty and the slow speed/idle jets are clogged. Don't bother with soaking those tiny jets. Get a small guitar string, I use the High E string...

Hello. I'm new to the XS650 having just acquired a 1977 xs650 a couple of weeks ago. It had been sitting since 1987 and even though it was dusty and dirty with some surface rust/pitting I fell in love with it. It is mostly complete the only things missing are the fuel tank cap, turn signals and...
