    Got my first deer...ouch.

Yeah..so that happened. Last night, I finished up syncing and adjusting the fuel mixture on my '80 XS. It has been sitting for almost two years with a rotor issue that I resolved a couple of days ago. So I was excited to take it out and test out the final result of the tuning. All went well...

Custom Rewind Rotor - Potential Problem

I will have to check it again. At this point, all this is moot. I hit a deer last night on the XS, and it has other problems to deal with now. I'm alive to talk about it, and that's a good thing. The deer did not survive.

Custom Rewind Rotor - Potential Problem

Got the rotor and stator back from Custom Rewind and all is good again. Charging at 14.87. Now for that carb tuning fun.

Custom Rewind Rotor - Potential Problem

I talked to the good folks at Custom Rewind. Best guess they had was the rotor never made it to their curing oven before being shipped out. Honest mistake. My bike became the curing oven. Unfortunately, it's cured everywhere but the rotor. Anyhow, they want to make it right, and have asked...

Custom Rewind Rotor - Potential Problem

Update on this issue. My bike has been out of service for about 20 months, related to a carb issue...broken float bowl post...etc...etc. I finally got around to buying a replacement carb body, and got that mess all straightened out this past week. Bike started on the first kick, and that is...

top end rebuild, parts laid out ready, any final tips?

Have Fun! Really, it's quite satisfying to do it yourself and enjoy the results when you fire it up again for the "first" time. :-)

    top end rebuild$

I'd budget $250-300 to start. That just about covers all the gaskets you'll need, a new cam chain, front chain guide, and other sundries. Cost goes up if you start replacing valves, pistons, rings..etc... That's been my experience anyhow...twice. Good times, and a really fun project as...

    This guy gets the XS.

What makes the guy "man enough" to sell it, considering all he had to say? Mines a keeper, and will never be sold by me. Great ad though.

Custom Rewind Rotor - Potential Problem

Anyone seen anything like this with their Custom Rewind Rotor? Here's what happened... A couple of days ago, my charging system stopped working. Initially, the indicator of such a problem was the headlight not coming on when the bike was started. This happened at dusk when I was quite a...

    Funny Story

I found my '80SG like that. Was at my mother-in-laws house, and the neighbor behind her was cutting down some huge evergreen trees that were separating the properties. A few days later I was back over there, and with the trees gone, could now see more into the neighbors backyard. There...

    Who Rode Today?

Not today, but I did fire up my '80 last Tuesday. It was in the mid 60s here in southern Minnesota. After the ride, I promptly removed the failed stator from last fall, and shipped it off to Custom Rewind. Now I'm just waiting for the replacement, and some goodies from MikesXS, before I...

Why do people hide their xs's?

They are out there. I'm fourth one in from the right. ('81) http://rokklym.smugmug.com/Photography/Wildcat-Mountain-Rally-2009/9566582_XxqRo#!i=643636820&k=vJYjM&lb=1&s=A Great ride at the Wildcat Mountain Rally in 2009. As you can see, a number of us showed up. I need to get back...

Front and Rear Disk calipers: interchangeable?

Bleeder valves are oriented a bit differently. See pics... You will notice the bleeder valves are oriented upright despite their mounting orientation front vs rear. Should still work fine though.

    Soda Blasting

I did the same "aircooledtech" soda blaster, and was quite pleased at how well it worked. Cleaned up my filthy carbs like they were new again. Not bad at all for a few cheap materials. The worst part is that the soda gets everywhere, including you. On the plus side, a shower after soda...

    Fall of the machine...'80 XS650

XSLeo...I completed the 500 mile break-in yesterday, using the method you described of charging the battery, and running with the reg/rec disconnected, as well as the headlight. It worked great. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be parking the bike for winter soon now anyhow, so the new rotor...

Looking for a billet fork brace.................

I wanted something in black, otherwise I would have considered the Tkat one. That one looks to be very well made. Not that the Tarozzi one from Fast isn't any good. I like it just fine.
