    Piston Slap? (Pics)

Looks to me like a 4 corner seizure. This is most commonly caused by inproper warm up, the piston will expand too quickly for the cylinder. It's possible the previous owner started it up and romped on it while it was cold. It only takes one time to get damage like that.

    Pamco or Boyer?

I couldn't get my hands on a Pamco for my '81 when I tried, they seem to be sold out everywhere and you have to wait a while to get one. I wound up buying a boyer ignition and it has been great so far. It was easy to install and allowed me to open up my spark plug gaps a little, which has led to...

How long should a top end rebuild take at a shop?

From start to finsih it shouldn't take more than a couple hours of work. The only hang up is if they had to send parts to a machine shop for machining (like if the head was warped). Even then they shouldn't have your engine for much more than a week tops in my opinion.

    Poor gas mileage

From most of the threads I've seen here it seems like most people are getting 45-50mpg easily. I just don't understand how I'm getting so much worse without the bike acting rich at all.

    Poor gas mileage

I am trying to figure out why I'm getting such bad gas mileage with my 81 XS650. I just rebuilt the engine (new pistons, rings, valves, cam chain) and had some mild porting done while it was apart. I have pod filters and a 2-1 exhaust with a pretty free flowing muffler. I'm at sea level...

Bike "burps" after you turn it off...What is that about?

This can sometimes be a sign that you are a little too rich on the pilot circuit. Left over fuel in the exhaust is being ignited just after you turn it off.

    What's it worth?

Thanks guys. I was thinking $2000-2200 would be a realistic price for this bike, but I really had nothing to base that on. I have around $1800 invested, but I didn't build it with any intention of selling it. But like they say, everything is for sale for the right price...

    What's it worth?

Looking to see what the general consensus is on this bike's value. Someone gave me an offer out of the blue (bike wasn't even for sale) and I'm wondering if it is a valid price or not. I'm beginning to wonder if I should take the cash and run or if I should keep the bike and keep riding it...

    Suddenly won't rev at all

Already tried epoxying a magnet on the rotor. Also checked the TCI pick up and changed the TCI itself, nothing has fixed it.

    Suddenly won't rev at all

No other ideas out there? Nobody else has run into this problem before?

    Suddenly won't rev at all

Pick up coil checks out fine, 750 ohms between each colored wire to the black one. I may have to send my old stock rotor to get rewound and see if that will cure it, but I really don't want to spend the money if that won't fix it. I'm becoming convinced that it is something with the new rotor...

    Suddenly won't rev at all

Yup, the battery is reading just above 12V when the bike is not running, and is reading the same when it is idling. When I touch the throttle it starts breaking down and popping and won't rev above 1,500 RPM, but the volts on the battery do not change.

    Suddenly won't rev at all

The battery is brand new and is fully charged. I just hooked my battery charger up to it to see if charging the battery for a while would make any difference, but it did not. I cannot check the voltage when I rev it b/c it will not rev above idle. When I unplug the reg/rect. it runs fine... Any...

    Suddenly won't rev at all

If this is the case, what can be done to get the current back down to normal?

    Suddenly won't rev at all

I've tried two other TCI's and they all do the same thing, so I don't think it is the TCI itself. Any other ideas? Could the new rotor itself be causing this issue?

    NYS Muffler Laws

According to http://www.dmv.ny.gov/mcmanual/mclicenses.htm exhausts with "cut-outs" and mufflers with removable baffles are prohibited. I have never seen anyone get in trouble for an exhaust with a removable baffle before though (as long as the baffle was in place). If you do run straight...

    NYS Muffler Laws

Straight pipes and mufflers with removable baffles are illegal in NY, however there are a lot of people out there with them. Some shops will pass a bike with straight pipes for inspection even though they are not supposed to, some don't for fear of losing their inspection license.

    Suddenly won't rev at all

Thanks guys. I know that they do not sell new TCI's, but I was hoping I could find a good used one for cheap. After looking at the price of used ones I will probably end up going with a Pamco unit, at least then everything will be new. The brushes and the rotor are brand new as of 2 weeks ago...

    Suddenly won't rev at all

Well I epoxied a new magnet over the one on the rotor and it ran great for 11 miles, then started doing the same thing again. I brought it home, pulled the left cover off and made sure the magnet was still in place. I cleaned the pick-up for the TCI and tried running it, but that made no...

    Suddenly won't rev at all

Well I guess it is easy to try a new magnet. If it were the magnet, what would be the reason for it running fine for a 10 mile ride, then not working the next time I started it?
