    Oil passage blockage

Turned out to be a mud wasp's nest between the cylinders blocking the air duct!

    oil pump

5Twins and Gary, the compression on a cold engine (bike won't start now though it did fine 2 days ago) was 95-100 on both sides, plugs out, throttle wide open, slides propped up. Ran it again with a bit of oil in each plug to test O-rings, but got the same thing. Suggests valves, so adjusted...

    Oil passage blockage

Fair enough…in any case, thank you for the candidness. I suppose everyone stands to benefit from a kick up the ass now and then. :) Going back to the bike...before it stopped turning on all together a couple das back...compression is coming in at 95-100 on each side with e-starter. It was...

    Oil passage blockage

I'm checking all offered solutions, Gary, but haven't been able to solve the problem yet. That's 3 people today who have accused me of this without knowing what I've done. That the problem hasn't been solved doesn't mean I'm not trying--I'm not sure how you all have arrived at that conclusion...

    Oil passage blockage

I've looked into every suggestion I've received and learn something new every time I post, which has been encouraging and accounts for the 3 posts on overheating. Thank you as always for the advice. As for the more personal allegations of laziness and not doing my research...I can see how it...

    Oil passage blockage

Purplezinger, other than an oil passage blockage, do the above symptoms bring anything else to mind?

    Oil passage blockage

In my case, the RH clutch case was excessively hot with steam coming off it, at mid to high RPMs the engine started to lose power, surge and buck, and then power would top out at 50mph and eventually drop to 30mph at full throttle. It would then have lots of trouble restarting until it had time...

    Oil passage blockage

I do know that the pump is turning since the tachmeter is working, though this doesn't guarantee oil flow. Does the oil passage from the clutch case begin right under the pump?

    Oil passage blockage

In trying to get to the bottom of a chronically overheating engine at mid to high RPM, I removed my valve cover last night to find that the oil is not spraying out as liberally as I'd like it to, which points to either a faulty oil pump (not likely) or an oil passage blockage. At the moment I'm...

What are the signs of a faulty oil pump?

Nice! Very familiar...I've been staring at it for the last week while finding time to clean out the clutch case cover and get it all back together (appears as if I didn't get the kickstarter screwed in properly either. It's still usable but doesn't return to the upright position and kicks down...

What are the signs of a faulty oil pump?

By the way, 5twins, the tachometer is working fine, so the tach cable must be spinning. As to whether anything's getting pumped out of there...I guess the easiest way to check for now is to remove the valve cover while the bike's on, no?

What are the signs of a faulty oil pump?

I think I've been confusing compression and oil pressure...unless these are linked. Are there two separate ways of checking oil pressure versus compression? Thanks for hanging with me here, it's my first time for all of this.

What are the signs of a faulty oil pump?

I adjusted the timing with a timing gun a few days back on idle at around 1250 RPM. With a gun, is it acceptable to do it at idle or do I need to open it to around 2000 RPM? Do you need a special tool to hook the compression gauge up to the tach cable connector area? I'll check the tach...

What are the signs of a faulty oil pump?

I'll check out the tach tonight--so you can actually see it spinning? Just to make sure, where exactly do you look and how is this supposed to look? I'll pick up a compression tester this week--can you find one at standard auto parts stores or it specialized for motorcycles? The problem is...

What are the signs of a faulty oil pump?

650Skull, no, I haven't been riding at all, not for the last month or so. Terribly frustrating. What do I look for in the taco cable to tell whether it's good or bad? Please fill me in in as much detail as you can. To recap, the bike was running fine for the first 3-4 weeks since buying it...

Effects of loosening/tightening cam chain adjustor

Thanks, very good advice. That's the most concise description of adjustment I've seen.

Effects of loosening/tightening cam chain adjustor

As a general rule of thumb, what kinds of effects with valves, points, timing, general operation would you expect by either loosening or tightening the cam chain adjustor by a mm or 2?

How to remove broken long allen screw from clutch case cover

Just below the top of the screw threads. I haven't had time to take off the cover to check it out, but I'm guessing the part that broke off is more or less flush with the screw hole. Hopefully I'll find later that there's something to grab onto with pliers so I can back it out without the need...
