I replaced all the plates. Used the new springs from MikesXS. The clutch is very finicky.... Best of luck!!

    Clutch won't disengage....sort of

Ended up grabbing a working clutch basket on ebay. Only cost about $40. So I was able to replace every plate for a decent price...

Clutch pressure plate has two positions

The more I think about it, the more I think the pressure plate is warped or bent. First off, it rocks very slightly when I lie it on glass. Second, the plate has 6 potential positions. The "out" positions would be 1, 2, and 3. The "in" would be 4, 5, and 6. This doesn't make sense to me...

Clutch pressure plate has two positions

I was having some issues with my clutch sticking. I took everything apart and cleaned the plates and replaced the thrust bearing and springs. Things were working ok when it was dry. However, whenever I'd pop the bike into gear and rock, and then try to disengage, the clutch would stick again...

Wanted - BS38 Slide (jet) needle preload spring

So I took apart the slide needle and out dropped the spring, never to be found again. :banghead: I ordered a set from Mikes, but it only fit the BS34. I need one Mikuni BS38 (1970-79) slide (jet) needle spring. If anybody has a spare junk BS38 lying around and can send the spring my way...

    Clutch won't disengage....sort of

Yeah...the engine had been sitting for years, so there was plenty of time for those plates to stick. But there should be no reason why they'd stick immediately after they were cleaned, right? Unfortunately, the bike creeps when you try to start it (aside from when its in neutral), so I'm stuck...

    Clutch won't disengage....sort of

And the pressure plate was moving when we'd engage the clutch hand lever

    Clutch won't disengage....sort of

Ok. So we just took the cover off and inspected the plates. They didn't look too bad. The friction plates were clean. The drive plates had a little varnish. I soaked everything in cleaner for a littler and reinstalled them. Everything was working perfectly when it was dry. But as soon as...

    Clutch won't disengage....sort of

Correct, the bike was not running. So if it is the throw out bearing, I'll have to take the cover off. Would the throw out bearing be busted or just stuck? If its busted, where would I get a new one? I see Mikes doesn't have them...

    Clutch won't disengage....sort of

Hey guys, I know people have posted in the past on clutches that won't disengage (stuck plates, cracked worm gear, etc). I have a similar problem and have done all but take the right side cover off to examine the clutch. I wanted to see if anybody had any ideas based on what I have so...

    Tacho drive

I don't believe any of the 650s had electrical tachos (or speedos)...I've ridden pre and post-79 xs's and that seems to be when most things changed. Mikesxs may have the part your missing if its the tacho threaded adapter (Part #51-6512). Post a picture if thats not the case. I capped the...

Rejetting and lowering the jet needle

So you changed them a few times but ended back up in the stock position (3rd slot)? I'll have to order a set of pilot jets then. Did you ever try #145 MJs?

Rejetting and lowering the jet needle

Thanks Tom. I removed the MJ and PJ without any trouble. There wasn't any varnish holding them in tightly. I stuck a wire through all of them, visually inspected them and soaked them. Was there anything I missed? I'll try to run them stock tomorrow. I'm just confused as to why the fuel was...

Rejetting and lowering the jet needle

I fired up my project (1979 XS650 SF) the other day using a temporary fuel tank (ie, gatorade bottle) and I could see the fuel just pouring in. I burned 1/4 of the bottle in probably 8 minutes of idling. I installed POD filters and basically straight pipes with minimal baffles. I took the...

Speedo drive won't hook accept speedo cable

So I finally figured it out. Apparently the XS750 speedo cables wouldn't thread into the drive, rather they had a bracket on the end of the cable that would bolt to the drive and hold the cable in place. I picked another drive with the cable up on eBay pretty cheap. So all in all, I ended up...

    Cylinder firing too hot

Thanks xsjohn. So you think the only reason I had to come out that many turns is because the pilot circuit is junky in both carbs? Would that make the gas consumption skyrocket at idle speeds like that? What do you think about the fact that I have the pod filters and short pipes? I've...

    Cylinder firing too hot

Ok. So I was running the bike last night. I adjusted the idle mixture and it seems to be running better. The only issue is that I had to bring the mix screw out about 4 or 5 turns, so I don't think it's spring loaded anymore. I think that means I need to change the pilots. The other issue...

    Aftermarket mufflers too big...

They sound pretty good. They have small removable baffles in each muffler. I think I'm going to leave them in for now. I ran the bike for a while last night with a homemade gas tank (gatorade bottle, a tube and an inline fuel filter). I could literally see the gas being consumed at a very...
